College Bowl Predictions
2004 BCS Championship
What a mess we have on our hands this year with the
2004 BCS Championship. I mean I thought the BCS committee would have learned
their lesson back in 2001 when Nebraska didn't even play in the Big 12
Championship game, but then made it to the Rose Bowl only to get killed by
Miami. How could the powers that be not have added a simple clause after that
season, a sentence, Only Conference Champions Can Play for the National
Championship. This year we don't have a team like Miami, a prohibitive
favorite to take care of business and bail out the failed system. No, no this
year we have 3 teams, but there is only 1 Sugar Bowl. The favorite in the polls,
USC, is the one who seems to be the odd men out as Oklahoma and LSU get to slug
it out in the Sugar Bowl. The Trojans on the other hand are in the Rose Bowl
with Michigan on New Year's Day. If they win, the writers will most likely
honor them with their national title. This BCS system could end up with us
having a split national championship just like the good old days when the
Coaches and Writers couldn''''t agree on who was the best team in the nation.
Now they do agree that USC is the tops, but the computers say otherwise. Of
course, the coaches national champion goes to the BCS champion by default so
they don't even get a vote in the matter.

The computers slide USC down to 3rd place in their polls because of two other
games on Saturday that seemed to hardly have any effects on USc. Boise State
beating Hawaii and Syracuse beating Notre Dame cost Usc just enough strength of
schedule points to drop them below LSU. If either of these teams would have won,
we would have a different set of Bowl matchups.
Another problem is the Conference Championship games in general. The SEC and Big
12 are the only 2 of the 6 BCS Conferences to have Title games. LSU's boost
by picking up another win over a strong team like Georgia shot them over USC. Of
course if the Big 12 didn't have a title game then Oklahoma wouldn't even
have a loss. The ACC plans on adding a championship game and will likely give Va
Tech, Miami, and Florida State a better chance at hitting the big dance,
assuming they don't kill each other in the regular season. Until all 6
conference either agree or disagree to hold a title game then this is going to
be an ongoing problem.
Let's just hope that Michigan comes through and beats the Trojans in the Rose
Bowl. That way we can have the Sugar Bowl be the definitive title game on
Janurary 4th. As far as a solution for next year, anything short of a playoff
system just isn't going to cut it, but we all know that too much money is at
stake for that to happen.
