2006 49ers Football

The season is drawing near so get ready with our 2008 San Francisco 49ers NFL Picks & Predictions!

It won't take long for the 2006 49ers football team to display the fact that they are the worst in the NFL.  The team lost a lot from a year ago in linebackers Andre Carter and Julian Peterson.  They have decided to reload their organization through the draft, so the team selected Manny Lawson and Parys Haralson.  These two are expected to come in and vie for starting roles.  The team also lost cornerback Ahmed Plummer, who was a mainstay in the secondary and two wide receivers in Brandon Lloyd and Rashaun Woods.  The off-season acquisitions didn't send any shockwaves to the rest of the division as San Francisco brought in Trent Dilfer to backup Alex Smith and hopefully accelerate his learning curve.  Antonio Bryant never reached his potential in Cleveland, but the Niners are hoping a change of scenary will bode well for him.  The secondary was restocked with Walt Harris, Sammy Davis, and Chad Williams.  The 49ers spent their first round draft choice on tight end Vernon Davis, who the team is hoping will develop into a weapon similar to Antonio Gates.

We are going to be talking a lot about worst in the league with the 2006 49ers football team and that starts with the quarterback position.  Smith looked lost last season and had troubles holding on to the football.  It remains to be seen if he was worth the no. 1 draft choice, this is a big year for him to produce after working hard in the off-season to get better.  The running back position may also be the league's worst with Kevan Barlow being unproductive and backup Frank Gore coming off a couple of major surgeries in the off-season.  At receiver things look slightly better but that is only because of the drafting of Davis.  He is fast and a huge target, but when the wide outs are Bryant and Arnaz Battle expect to see defenses focusing in on Davis.

Bryant Young leads the defensive line, but after 12 years in the league the guy has lost a couple of steps.  The rest of the line isn't going to threaten to make any Pro Bowls any time soon.  Linebacker might be the most set position on the team, with rookie Manny Lawson expected to contribute right away.  Derek Smith and Jeff Ulbrich are also both a couple of guys that can make big plays.  The secondary is weak, with the only two average to above average players back there being Shawntae Spencer at corner and Tony Parrish at safety.

The 49ers won their last two games of the year to get to 4 wins last season, which was more than they should have had after finishing dead last in both total offense and total defense.  This season they could make improvements and still be the worst team in football.  We feel pretty confident about taking the Under 5 wins at Bookmaker.
