2006 Arkansas Razorbacks Football Predictions
After two straight losing years the 2006 Arkansas Razorbacks football team should be hungry for some wins. This year’s team will return 19 of their 22 starters from a year ago, and has the kind of schedule that can lead to an impressive run. If things falls into place this team has an outside shot of contending for the SEC West, but a strong bowl and a winning season are both very achievable.
The offense used to be one-dimensional with the focus solely being on moving the ball via the ground. The Razorbacks are trying to change that though by installing a more balanced offense that will occasionally use no-huddle. The quarterback position is a wide open race right now with sophomore Casey Dick and junior Robert Johnson. The strength of the team still comes with their running game and a trio of backs in Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, and Peyton Hills. Hills plays fullback and is a big bruiser with decent speed while Jones is the quickest player on the team and McFadden is a nice combo of both. The team doesn’t have very much talent at reciever this year, with Marcus Monk being the only dependable threat.
Last year’s team was solid against the run and with nine of those starters back, they should be tough against the rush again this season. The line is solid with Jamaal Anderson, Keith Jackson, and Marcus Harrison while the leader of the team resides at linebacker in Sam Olajubutu. He was 3rd in the SEC a year ago in tackles and will once again be using his sideline to sideline speed to chase down the ball. The team is solid in the secondary with Darius Vinnett, Chris Houston, Matterral Richardson, Randy Kelly, and Michael Grant. This team should be more than capable of defending the pass as well.
The schedule starts out with USC at home, if they can at least put up a good fight they can use the momentum the rest of the season. If they get blown out then the next chance they’ll have to prove themselves is a decisive game at home against Alabama on the 23rd. With the talent returning and the fact that most big games are at home, this team has the makings of at least seven or eight wins and a nice bowl appearance.
