2006 Auburn Tigers Football

Written by Jimmy Boyd

With a record of 22-3 over the last two seasons, the 2006 Auburn Tigers football team are going to have high expectations placed on them once again no matter who is making college football predictions on them. The team returns six starters from a defense that ranked 6th in points against last year and returns both Brandon Cox and Kenny Irons at quarterback and tailback. With one of the more favorable schedules in the SEC, they could easily run the table to the SEC Title game.

The offensive question marks center around receiver. Courtney Taylor is the only pass catcher who has had any experience on a team that lost three stars from a year ago. The good news is that they will have a veteran quarterback in Brandon Cox who can groom the youngsters in quickly. Irons was backup until the sixth game of last year but somehow ended up with 1,293 yards rushing, good enough to lead the SEC.

The defense will be under Will Muschamp’s command this year, who left the Dolphins after a single year and won a national championship with Saban at LSU. He doesn’t have much to work with experience wise in his front four, but at linebacker the team has Will Herring, Karibi Dede, and Tray Blackmon. This team will once again be tough against the run. The secondary will be hurt by Herring’s move to linebacker, but they still have David Irons and Jonathan Wilhite’s experience at cornerback.

The schedule for the Tigers looks manageable on paper. In September they get a visit from LSU which will go a long way to determining who wins the SEC West then they head to South Carolina on the 28th. Games at home against Florida and Georgia appear to be the only challenges after that as we see this Auburn team resembling the one from 2004 in that they could be undefeated come bowl season.
