2006 Cincinnati Bengals Football Picks & NFL Predictions
Those following 2006 Bengals football will have high expectations, but meeting those standards will be tough for this year’s team. The team got over the hump last season, making the playoffs for the first time since 1990 and finally giving their fan base a team with a winning record. The team will have a major target on their backs, and after losing their last 3 games other coaching staffs may have finally caught up with the Cincinnati offense. In the off-season Jon Kitna was the major departure, especially with Palmer’s off-season knee surgery and the uncertainty that brings to the position. The team upgraded their defense by signing Sam Adams to be a run-stopper and Dexter Jackson at the safety position.
The offense starts with Carson Palmer who was absolutely phenomenal last year throwing 32 touchdown passes while being intercepted only 12 times. All signs point to him recovering in time for the season to begin, but at just what strength and with how much time in training camp will be the big questions. If he can’t make it back to start the season or has a relapse the Bengals will have to rely on Anthony Wright, who has been less than impressive with Dallas and Baltimore. At running back the Bengals have one of the most under-rated bruisers in the business with Rudi Johnson. He’s young and has gained over 1,400 yards on the ground both years he’s been the feature back. There is a solid receiving corps here with Chad Johnson being one of the game’s best, TJ Houshmandzadeh being a solid secondary option, and Antonio Chatman coming in this year from Green Bay. Chris Henry has had all kinds of off the field legal problems and it’ll be interesting to see how Marvin Lewis reacts and if he is apart of this 2006 Bengals football roster.
Even though Lewis has been known for being a defensive mastermind, Cincy was 28th in the league in defense last season and especially bad against the pass. They did lead the league in interceptions but they may have been taking a few too many chances in doing so. The defensive line is going to have to put more pressure on quarterbacks as they got to the opposing signal callers only 28 times last season. At linebacker the team has a solid group with Odell Thurman and David Pollack. Both Georgia alum will be entering their second years and should be ready to dominate things defensively a little more this season. The secondary is led by Jackson and Deltha O’Neal, who recovered his former glory last season after being left for dead by Denver. This squad gave up too many big plays, and may need to be a little more conservative this season if the offense doesn’t have Palmer calling the shots.
The 2006 Bengals football schedule is a grueling one and they will have to be on top of their games if they hope to return to the playoffs. Last season this team won their division just to see their hopes dash on the second offensive play of their playoff game against Pittsburgh. There is probably going to be more disappointment this year from Cincy as they will just miss out on a second straight playoff birth, but we’ll be happy cashing in with our NFL betting on the under 9 wins.
