California USC Betting Lines & Point Spreads

Written by Jimmy Boyd on May 21, 2008

Here are the football odds for the California USC game that we have found our winner on. The stakes don’t get any higher than this Saturday night’s Cal versus USC Pac 10 matchup to see who will get the Pac 10 BCS bid. A victory by the Trojans will keep their hope alive to play for the national title for the fourth straight season. A win by Cal puts the Golden Bears in the Rose Bowl for the first time since the 1958 season.

While USC was upset three weeks ago by Oregon State, Cal’s national title hopes were still alive until last week’s devastating loss to Arizona. Cal boasts the best back in the Pac 10 in Marshawn Lynch who is just the second player in team history to record two 1000-yard seasons. Quarterback Nathan Longshore leads the conference with 2,393 yards and 21 touchdowns. O yeah, and Cal has one more offensive weapon, DeSean Jackson. Jackson holds a Pac 10 record with five career punt returns. Four of those have come this season and he is averaging 20.7 yards per return. He also has nine touchdowns on 45 catches for 811 yards. His special teams ability is definitely something that Pete Carroll and USC are aware of. Don’t be surprised if the Trojans kick away from the talented return man to make him a non-factor in the return game.

USC will have its hands full with Cal’s slew of offensive weapons, but the Trojans boast a very good defense which shutout Stanford two weeks ago and held then 21st ranked Oregon to 10 points in consecutive blowout victories following the Trojans’ sole loss this season. The defense has given up just 12 touchdowns all season and should present a challenge for tailback Marshawn Lynch. USC gives up just 91.3 yards per game on the ground and Cal comes in averaging 165.7. Who wins the battle at the line of scrimmage will go along way in deciding the outcome of this game.

Cal may be very talented offensively, but its defense has been suspect at times giving up 378.5 total yards per game. They say defense wins championships, but if Cal wins the Pac 10 title Saturday, I can guarantee you its because of its offense.

Will USC shutdown Cal’s high-powered offense or will the Bears prove that there’s another team worthy of national attention in the Pac 10? Jimmy Boyd has considered every angle in Saturday night’s big game and he couldn’t be more confident in his winning football picks on the side.
