2006 Chargers FootballUpdated now our 2008 San Diego Chargers Predictions! There are a lot of questions for the 2006 Chargers football team, but the biggest is how far can Phillip Rivers take them? The biggest lost from last year's squad is Drew Brees, who wasn't resigned after going down with a shoulder injury to end last season. After drafting Rivers, Brees stepped his game up the last two seasons and will leave a big void that Rivers is going to have to try and fill. The other two players that got away are Jamar Fletcher at corner and Reche Caldwell at wide receiver. These two are not going to be missed that much as the Chargers chose to upgrade in other areas. Rashaun Woods has shown potential and will be given the chance to shine in San Diego. The Chargers drafted Antonio Cromartie in the first round even though he had limited playing experience at Florida State and they got Charlie Whitehurst in the third round. 20% Signup Bonus when depositing via eCheck at SportsInteraction! If you are talking offense with the 2006 Chargers football team then it begins and ends with LaDainian Tomlinson. He is producing big numbers during his stay in San Diego and will most likely go down as the best back of his generation. What is going to be his work load this year with an unknown for a quarterback? He has proven he can handle whatever is thrown at him and the Chargers are going to need him to keep producing this season. Rivers is a thinking quarterback who had plenty of time to learn the game after watching Brees the last two seasons. He was a 4th overall selection three years ago, so the talent is there, we'll just see if he can prove himself. The wide receivers are not much of a threat here, with McCardell aging fast, but Antonio Gates single handedly makes this squad a threat through the air. He is almost unstoppable around the goal line and helped San Diego rank 5th in scoring last season. The defensive front seven should be solid for the 2006 Chargers football team. On the line they have giant run stuffers in Igor Olshansky and Luis Castillo, and a solid Pro Bowler at the end spot in Jamal Williams. Shawne Merriman made a huge impact in just his first year in the league last season, and a lot will be expected of him again this year. Donnie Edwards and Randall Godfrey are getting up there in years, but should be able to help mold some of the young guys into better players. Quentin Jammer and Drayton Florence were both high round draft picks but haven't done a whole lot for the secondary. This is the weakest part of the team and doesn't get many turnovers. The Chargers are hurt by playing in the same division as the Chiefs and Broncos. They will probably get to 9 wins again this year, but we don't see them getting over the hump with an inexperienced passer in Rivers. You will most likely find this squad at home in January watching the AFC playoffs like everyone else, however, our bet will bet placed at Bodog with the Over 8.5 wins the odds maker set.
