2006 Kansas City Chiefs Football Picks & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on August 22, 2006

It’s going to see how the 2006 Chiefs football team performs when they have a great offensive squad and a new defensive minded coach. Herm Edwards takes over for Dick Vermeil and the two couldn’t be more polar opposites. Vermeil was all about opening up the offense and out-scoring everyone, while Edwards is going to be all for defense and running the ball. The good news is that he has a bruiser in Larry Johnson to satisfy that part of the equation but the Chiefs have a talented air attack and a shady defense to say the least. The team lost more than they gained in the off-season with Shawn Barber and Eric Warfield leaving the defense and Marc Borerigter, Chris Horn, and Tony Richardson the big names that won’t be around for the 2006 Chiefs football team on the offensive side. The team didn’t really add any big names to the team and any improvement will come from either Edwards’s tutelage or the growth of some young players like Derrick Johnson on defense and Larry Johnson on offense.

Offense hasn’t been a problem lately for the Chiefs as they lead the league in yards gained last season with 387 per game. It’s a balanced attack with Johnson running and Trent Green throwing. Green is steady and puts up big numbers. He comes into this season at 36 years of age and makes smart decisions and takes what defenses give. He does have a good batch of receivers to throw to as well, starting with maybe the best tight end in football with Tony Gonzalez. He didn’t put up quite the dominant numbers that Chiefs fans have been getting used to, but that’s mostly because Larry Johnson was so dominant. Eddie Kennison has had two big seasons in Kansas City, but there isn’t another standout option at wide receiver. Johnson posted big numbers when he finally took over for Priest Holmes last season, and a lot of people are expecting 2,000 yards from him this year. We don’t quite see him producing those type of monster numbers over the course of the season, but he’s a horse who’ll have 1400 to 1600 yards this season if he stays healthy.

Defensively is where the question marks are still there for the 2006 Chiefs football team. Their line is about average, with rookie Tamba Hali expected to come in and provide a spark. Both Eric Hicks on the other side of the line and Ryan Sims at tackle have under-performed in their time in KC. At linebacker, Kendrell Bell came over from Pittsburgh last season and was disappointing. If this group is going to make an improvement it is going to be from Derrick Johnson making some more big plays and becoming a leader. Kansas City’s secondary added two players from the Dolphins last year but both showed they are aging. Sammie Knight at safety and Patrick Surtain at cornerback are going to have to tutor a young group of draftees, but neither is as effective as they once were.

There have only been four teams in the last 15 years to miss the playoffs after piling up 10 wins, but Kansas City was one of them last year. The same situation could happen to them again as they are going to be in a tough fight for the division title with the Broncos and there are plenty of talented teams chasing the AFC Wild Card. The number of improvements they made are small, so we don’t know how they are going to get more than 10 wins this season, most likely they’ll end up with 9, which you can bet by taking the Chiefs under 9.5.
