2006 Clemson Tigers Football Picks & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on August 22, 2006

Many experts are saying the 2006 Clemson Tiger’s offense could be even better than in 2005 despite losing record-setting QB Charlie Whitehurst because the mobile Will Proctor who will be stepping in is more suited for offensive coordinator Rob Spence’s style. But I’m not buying it. The ACC has some of the fastest secondaries in the country and I don’t think Proctor will be able to make the pin-point throws that Whitehurst made. However, I do expect Clemson to have a strong offense as they return all 5 starting offensive lineman. Last season’s ACC rookie of the year, tailback James Davis, as well as senior Reggie Merriweather and true freshman C.J. Spiller will have plenty of gaping holes to run through and Clemson’s deep receiving core could help out Proctor. Expect a big season from senior Chansi Stuckey who was a first team All-ACC performer last season. Aaron Kelly, Rendrick Taylor, and true freshman Jacoby Ford will compete with Miami for the best set of receiver in the conference, but they should be tops in the Atlantic Division.

The Tigers will be hoping to exploit their opponents defenses through the air, but they will hope that they won’t be exploited themselves as cornerback is Clemson’s undeniable weak spot. With Tye Hill’s departure the Tigers have a huge hole at cornerback. They will try to fill the whole with a pair of players who haven’t ever seen time at corner. Duane Coleman was listed as a tailback last season and Gaddis was a safety. Offenses will be able to pick on either one of these guys a great deal. Expect to see plenty of zone coverage from Clemson to try to cover up their defensive weakness. Luckily the Tigers have one of their most solid line backing corps in years led by Anthony Waters who will get plenty of national attention this season.

If we take a look at Clemson’s schedule, the Tigers should be able to avenge most of last season’s losses. Florida State will once again be a tough game and perhaps Clemson’s toughest game of the season in week 3 as Drew Weatherford will undoubtedly test the secondary in Tallahassee. Boston College, Wake Forest, and Georgia Tech all beat the Tigers in 2005, but I think the Tigers take 2 out of 3 in these matchups this season. Virginia Tech will be a tough game as the Tigers didn’t see the Hokies last season and South Carolina in the season closer could be more than the Tigers are bargaining for.
