2006 Colts Football

Fans, expert commentators, and our sports handicapping service are expecting big things out of the 2006 Colts football team.  The team got off to one of the best starts in history last year when they won 13 straight games and were just cruising past everyone that crossed their path.  Disappointment loomed though as they did get the monkey off their backs in winning at New England, but faltered in their first playoff game to Pittsburgh.  The team went through a lot of changes though in this off-season, but remain the favorite to take the Lombardi trophy home come February.  The biggest loss the team had to suffer was losing Edgerrin James to Arizona and they choose to replace him via the draft and Joseph Addai from LSU.  The other big name the team lost is Mike Vanderjagt which is only the most accurate field goal kicker in league history.  At least they got a viable replacement in the best clutch kicker in NFL history by taking Adam Viatieri from the rival Patriots.

Offensively this team is going to be fine even with the loss of James.  Will they be the juggernaut that they were last season in scoring 27.5 points per game?  Maybe not, but don't look for too big of a drop off.  Manning has been one of the most durable quarterbacks in the league's history not named Brett Favre, but Sorgi can fill in if Manning is out of the lineup for short periods of time.  With the loss of James you are going to see significant action from both Dominic Rhodes and Addai.  Neither are going to put up James-like numbers, but they need to just hold their own so Manning can continue to use the play-action pass to set up big plays.  At receiving it's tough not to love having Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, and Brandon Stokley.  You are probably looking at the best trio of pass catching threats in the league, with the league's best passer delivering the ball.  The line got a lot of criticism from Manning after losing to the Steelers, but this is a good group who give up 25 sacks all season before allowing 5 against Pitt.

On the 2006 Colts football team's defensive side of the ball there should continue to be improvements.  The line is definitely set with Freeney being an absolute terror to opposing quarterbacks.  This is one of the best groups in the league with Corey Simon filling up holes.  They will get to the quarterback without the need to do a lot of blitzing, which will help them cover receivers better.  Cato June made his first Pro Bowl last season at the linebacker spot, but this is the weakest part of the Colts defense.  In the secondary Bob Sanders has come in and changed the team's attitude.  He is intense and hard hitting for only being 5'8" and 200 pounds.  If the team is going to have the kind of success they had last season they better be good on this side of the ball.  In 2005 the team gave up a little over 15 points per game, which was good enough for second best in the NFL.

The choice of odds makers and ourselves as the favorite to win the Super Bowl is the Indianapolis Colts.  The team is not without a few question marks, mostly on defense and with the subtraction of James, but if we had to put money down on Super Bowl futures then this is the team that we would go with.  We like the addition of Vinatieri as well just for the pressure situations they will face in the playoffs that Vanderjagt had a tendency to choke in.  Take the Over 11.5 wins at Bookmaker and you'll be happy in the long run.
