2006 Florida Gators Football Predictions
Urban Meyer is hoping his 2006 Florida Gators football team makes as big of a jump as Bowling Green and Utah did in his second years at those schools. In his second year at each the offense has jumped up 13.5 points per game and if Florida can do the same, they are going to be a tough school to beat this fall. The Gators have one of the toughest schedules in the land with LSU, Auburn, and Georgia in three consecutive weeks, but if they can get past those three games they will have a great shot to contend for the BCS Championship.
It’s the senior campaign for Chris Leak and he is ready to shine. His production dipped last year as he adjusted to yet another new offense, but with a year under his belt look for him to be comfortable in leading this side of the ball. The team has three talented senior wide receivers in Andre Caldwell, Dallas Baker, and Jemalle Cornelius so putting up big numbers shouldn’t be a problem for Leak. At running back DeShawn Wynn returns, but should be pused by sophomore Kestahn Moore. This is a spot where the Gators are looking for better numbers this season.
The Gators return six starters from a team that ranked 9th in yards allowed and should be tough again this year. The line is experienced and talented with tackles Marcus Thomas and Joe Cohen plugging holes which will allow Jarvis Moss to get to the passer even more this season. The crew at linebacker is set with Brandon Siler and Earl Everett playing sideline to sideline and making big plays. You can bet they’ll earn some post-season honors if they remain healthy. The secondary is led by Reggie Nelson at strong safety, but there is speed and playmaking ability all the way around.
The schedule is the only thing standing in Florida’s way of an SEC title and a shot at the national championship. The team’s two early season gimmes are Southern Miss and Central Florida, but both of these squads made bowls last year. They then go to Tennessee which shouldn’t pose too tough of a test, but starting September 30th they have Alabama and LSU at home, a visit to Auburn, then head to Jacksonville for Georgia. Not to mention they close the season at Florida State and possible against the SEC West champion. Running the table will be a challenge, but with our college football predictions we expect around 10 wins for Meyer’s team this fall.
