2006 Georgia South Carolina

Now take a look at our 2008 Georgia Football Predictions!

The 12th ranked Georgia Bulldogs get the SEC season underway when they head to South Carolina to take on the Gamecocks this weekend. Georgia opened up its season last week by defeating Western Kentucky 48-12, but the Bulldogs totaled just 295 yards of offense. I’m expecting Georgia to put up better numbers through the air with starting quarterback Joe Tereshinsky getting a little more time under center in this one.

Georgia may have been disappointed with its offensive performance in the opener, but the Gamecocks should have been more disappointed as they managed just a 15-0 win over lowly Mississippi State. The Gamecocks managed just 10 first downs and 274 yards of total offense. However, holding Mississippi State scoreless marked the Gamecocks first shutout in six years. But I’m not chalking that up as much of an accomplishment against one of the worst teams in the SEC.

Shaky offensive performances in the opener is expected, but Georgia, who finished second in the league in passing last season and third in rushing, is a much better offensive team than South Carolina. You’ll see that made clear in this matchup as Georgia will pick up their offensive play and South Carolina will stay right around the 300-yard mark.

Spurrier does have history on his side as he is 11-2 all-time versus Georgia, but he is 0-1 as coach of the Gamecocks, going down to the Bulldogs in Athens last season. Georgia has now won four straight against South Carolina and have begun each of the past four seasons with consecutive wins.

Georgia was clearly the better football team last season, but the Bulldogs only managed a 17-15 win at home. Despite Georgia clearly being the better team again in 2006, this matchup being played in South Carolina raises a red flag, but I’ll still take the Bulldogs here -3 for a small play.
