2006 Houston Texans NFL Picks & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on August 11, 2006

The 2006 Texans football team better make some positive strides after passing on Vince Young and Reggie Bush in the NFL draft, but our NFL predictions see Mario Williams panning out just fine. The team instead decided to upgrade their defense by taking Williams of North Carolina State. The good news for Texans fans is that the team let five players go from a year ago that they had no interest in retaining and picked up quite a few additions. The biggest free agent acquisition on the defensive side of the ball was with Sam Cowart, who was a force with the Bills before heading to the Vikings. If he can remain healthy he should fit in nicely with a revamped defense. Eric Moulds comes over from Buffalo and should immediately give another option to David Carr. The only real knock on him is that he’s going to be 33 this season and his best years are behind him.

When you take a look at the offensive side of the 2006 Texans football team you will notice that the opposition is not going to fear taking them on. Last season this team ranked 30th in total offense with only 253 yards per game. David Carr put up decent numbers last season, but he has never had a line to protect him and give him time to throw the ball. New head coach Gary Kubiak should come in and bring some experience with great offensive lines from his time in Denver. There is not a real backup on the team with Sage Rosenfels filling that spot, but Carr has shown to be durable even after taking a beating so we don’t envision a backup playing a key role. Domanick Davis is the reason the Texans felt they could take a pass on Reggie Bush. He has done well for the Texans with two 1,000 yard rushing seasons and another just shy. Carr is going to be better off passing to Moulds and Andre Johnson this season as long as one of the worst offensive lines in football can benefit from Kubiak’s tutelage and give him some time to throw the ball.

The defense was attrocious last season even though Dom Capers was supposed to know that side of the ball. The team ranked 32nd in points allowed and rushing defense. Even though they made some moves, it’s not going to be easy to get their woes turned around in a single season. The defensive line will be improved with the additions of Williams and Anthony Weaver. The linebackers are pretty much a bunch of no-names except for Cowart and Kailee Wong, who suffered a major knew injury and will miss most of the first half of the season. Their secondary is not much better, but blown coverages can be overlooked if the team is putting enough pressure on opposing quarterbacks. This team is going to struggle defensively against teams again this season.

We are not real optimistic about the 2006 Texans football team. Kubiak will probably be a talented head coach when given the chance, but with this group of guys we don’t see a whole lot of improvements going on this season. Offensively the team only needs to get their line together to enter the ranks of average squads, but their defense is porous and will allow a lot of points again this year. Take the Under 5.5 wins at a nice underdog value.
