Indiana is like several Big 10 teams in that their offense shows promise, but their defense lets them down. Blake Powers set an Indiana single-season record in 2005 with 22 touchdown passes. Note that most of these touchdowns came in the early part of the season against weak non conference opponents. Powers also has plenty of talent to throw to in sensational receiver James Hardy who has a bright future ahead of him in the NFL. Hardy caught TD passes in 7 of his first 8 games and had 5 100 yard receiving games last year. A pathetic running game keeps Indiana from really doing some damage through the air. If they could run the football effectively, the Hoosiers could be more competitive in the Big 10 as it would keep the defense honest and allow Hardy to see more one-on-one coverage on the outside. The Hoosiers’ young line is highly touted, but they are Young and will be exposed by virtually every team in the Big 10 this year.

One bright spot for Indiana is that they return all 4 defensive backs who led the Big 10 in pass defense last season. However, this doesn’t really matter too much considering teams can run on the Hoosiers at will. Their pass defense will also likely deteriorate some with the loss of their top 2 defensive ends. With Indiana not getting near as much pressure on the QB, Indiana’s solid secondary could go from first to worst.

Indiana will have to do their homework this season to put together solid scouting reports on the defensive side of the ball just to keep from getting blown out. In 7 of Indiana’s 8 Big 10 games, the Hoosiers gave up 38 points or more not winnings any of those contests. In fact, Indiana has lost 22 straight games when giving up 38 or more points to opponents. The defense will have to find a way to slow down the opposition, likely by stacking the line, if they expect to be in many games this season.
