2006 Iowa State Cyclones Football

Now take a look at our 2008 Iowa State Football Predictions!

The schedule is going to kill the 2006 Iowa State Cyclones football team right from the start.  The team is going to have to face nine bowl teams from a year ago and coach Dan McCarney will be crowned Big 12 Coach of the Year if this team could win 8 games.  Sadly, it's not that this is that bad of a team.

The offense is going to be explosive this season for the Cyclones as the team returns nine of their eleven starts from a year ago.  Quarterback Bret Meyer is regarded by many as the best QB in the Big 12, and some might think he's a serious dark horse for Heisman consideration.  He completed 62% of his passes and threw for 2,876 yards last season and will see two top receivers returning from a year ago in Todd Blythe and Austin Flynn.  Blythe has All-Big 12 accolades already and will be looking for more national recognition this season.  Senior Stevie Hicks missed most of five games a year ago and needs to get back to being the force that he was as a sophomore.

That high powered offense is going to have to score because this defense doesn't look like it's going to be able to stop too many teams this year.  They lost seven seniors off of last year's squad but the biggest disappointments were losing Jason Berryman to off-field issues and Matt Robertson due to using illegal supplements.  The secondary is going to be young and inexperienced outside of corner DeAndre Jackson, but when they practice day after day against a great group of receivers, there should be improvements by the end of the year.

Brutal schedule this year for the Cyclones.  They have three games on the schedule that fans should be real surprised if the Cyclones win and they are at Iowa, at Texas, and at Oklahoma.  There are a group of games where Iowa State is going to be an underdog with a real chance of winning in their home battles against Nebraska and Texas Tech.  At home against Toledo, Kansas, and Missouri then going to Colorado are going to be the four games that define the season as a success or disappointment.  Look for 7 wins to be the max for this squad so take the Under.
