2006 Jags FootballGet ready for the season with our 2008 Jacksonville Jags Football Predictions & Preview! It's a season of hope for the 2006 Jags football team, and for good reason. The biggest part of the franchise that won't be returning is wide receiver Jimmy Smith, who retired after catching 862 passes and he became a border-line hall-of-famer. The team wanted to go with LaVar Arrington to upgrade at line backer, but got stuck with the guy he is replacing on the Giants in Nick Greisen. The only other major part not returning is cornerback Kenny Wright, but they got a major upgrade with Minnesota's Brian Williams. The team is hoping that second round draft pick Maurice Drew out of UCLA is going to be good enough to be a permanent replacement for the aging Fred Taylor. 20% Signup Bonus when depositing via eCheck at SportsInteraction! Offensively the team is just a little above average but they really tried to upgrade this section of the team even with the loss of Jimmy Smith. Byron Leftwich needs to stay healthy, but backup David Garrard proved himself as capable when Leftwich went down last year. Leftwich is in a contract year so it's possible that he is going to explode and prove that he deserves a lucrative contract extension. Outside of Fred Taylor the Jags have a lot of supply at running back, but nobody in this group is ready to stand out and take a majority of the load. At receiver they are losing one of the game's best in Smith, but the team has tried to find some tall guys in the draft in Reggie Williams and Matt Jones. Jones is a converted quarterback who at times looks a little slow on the field, but he's definitely football smart and can make some big plays. The name of the 2006 Jags football is going to be made once again on the defensive side of the ball. This team as 6th in points allowed and 6th in yards against last season and if anything they are going to be better this season. It all gets started with one of the best defensive lines in the NFL. Pro Bowler Marcus Stroud is a force at tackle, always getting the attention of opponents. Reggie Hayward is one of the best ends you might not have heard of and he picked up 8.5 sacks last year for this team. The weakness of the defense is at linebacker and yet most teams would love to have this unit. Mike Peterson has led the team in tackles for three straight seasons and is as solid as they come, as is newcomer Nick Greisen who was displaced out of New York with their signing of Arrington. The 3rd spot is up in the air with a lot of mediocre guys trying to stand out. At cornerback they have two good ones in Brian Williams and Rashean Mathis who will allow the team to blitz more with their glue-like coverage. The safeties don't make a lot of big plays, but hit hard and get in on a lot of tackles. We think good things could be in store for the 2006 Jags football team. They are going to be a strong contender in the AFC South and in the Wild Card race, but personally we are one of the ones in the minority that think the team is going to suffer a small setback this year and miss the playoffs. We don't like the loss of Jimmy Smith and the way Fred Taylor has declined. Expectations are going to be high and with a tough first four games on the schedule the fans are going to get concerned if they don't get off to a good start. Expect 9 wins but an off-season of second guessing. You can get in on the Under 9.5 win total with us at Bookmaker. NFL Predictions
