2006 Kentucky Football Picks & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on August 30, 2006

The best that the 2006 Kentucky Wildcats football team can hope for is a .500 season and their first bowl bid since 1999. Coach Rich Brooks has reason for optimism with 15 starters back from a year ago and a slightly easier schedule this season. The team isn’t going to flirt with the big boys in the SEC, but with our college football predictions we think that if things fall into place, they just might earn that bowl bid that they are shooting for.

Andre Woodson started all eleven games last year for the Wildcats, but the junior might be replaced this season by sophomore Curtis Pulley. Woodson is the less mobile pocket passer and with Kentucky’s passing offense ranking 101st in the nation last year, a change might be a good thing. Pulley is more mobile and will be able to make plays with both his arm and his feet. The team’s spark on offense is with tailback Rafael Little. Little led last year’s team in both rushing and receptions while also returning punts and kickoffs. The entire offensive line will return which should help him maintain big numbers on the ground.

The Wildcat defense finished last in the SEC in points against, rushing defense, and passing defense so the return of seven starters may not be the best of news. The team was hampered by a lot of injuries last year, so the first issue will be to keep the team healthy. The biggest talent up front will be defensive end Ricky Abren, but he hasn’t lived up to his potential in his first two years at Kentucky. The team’s defensive leader is linebacker Wesley Woodyard, who will patrol the field at weak side linebacker. He’s going to be counted on to make big plays in his junior season. Bo Smith is a talented cornerback, but the secondary has little to be desired after him.

The Wildcats don’t get off to an easy start when they travel to Louisville, but could get a couple back to back wins with Texas State and Ole Miss. The team can also pick up wins against Central Michigan, at Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and UL-Monroe. If these six games go their way then you will be seeing the Wildcats in a bowl game, but one slip up could cost them their season.
