2006 Oklahoma Football Picks & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on August 1, 2006

With our college football predictions we expect the 2006 Oklahoma Sooners football team to contend for the nation title. The team got off to a rough start in 2005 when they lost at home to Texas Christian and then at UCLA, but the team played well after the Red River Shootout, losing their only other game at Texas Tech by 2 points. The struggles of last year are going to translate into a much strong team this year as they have key players back on both offense and defense. If you plan on doing any football betting on this team, at least see if we have any free football picks covering the Sooners each week. They may not be as strong as the premium NCAA football picks you can find on the site, but they’ll still help you win.

The offense centers around this year’s Heisman trophy candidate in Adrian Peterson. He was hurt last season yet still managed to gain over 1,000 yards on the ground. He was a Heisman runner-up two years ago, and will be carrying home the trophy this year as long as Rhett Bomar can provide to be a threat through the air. Bomar grew up fast last season and really came into his own to earn the Holiday Bowl MVP award and is a very talented guy to have under center. The Sooners definitely have a lot of talent at receiver to help him showcase his skills and sophomore Malcolm Kelly could be great.

Defense has never been a problem for Oklahoma under Bob Stoops and with as much talent returning as he has this year, it’s going to be tough for opponents to score this year. The secondary has experience and one of the most talented corners in the Big 12 in Reggie Smith. The line is going to cause problems for the opposition with Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the year CJ Ah You poised for a big senior season. This group of linebackers will continue a tradition started by Rocky Calmus and Teddy Lehman. Look for Rufus Alexander to make a run for the Butkus award at weak outside linebacker.

There are a couple of tough games on this year’s schedule for the Sooners, but there is no doubt that at the end of the year if there are a bunch of teams in contention that there strength of schedule will help propel them into the BCS. The key games are September 16th at Oregon and October 7th in Dallas against the defending national champs in the Texas Longhorns. If they can win the Red River Shootout and stay healthy, then they are going to be on their way to a national title.
