2006 Seattle Seahawks Football Picks & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on August 11, 2006

When people start talking about the curse of the Super Bowl loser they start placing NFL predictions on Seattle to fail, but the 2006 Seahawks football are thinking about being the ones to break it. Seattle is going to miss a couple of key players from last year’s team in left guard Steve Hutchinson and wide receiver Joe Jurevicius. Both of these guys were big contributors on last year’s team and left big holes. Seattle did get a little help though with Julian Peterson and linebacker over from San Francisco and Nate Burleson to replace Jurevicius at wide out. The draft was also nice to Seattle when they selected Kelly Jennings at cornerback out of Miami and Darryl Tapp, a defensive end out of Virginia Tech. These guys are talented and if they pick up their roles quickly will find themselves in starting roles.

The 2006 Seahawks football team looks to be explosive once again as they ranked first in scoring last year at 28.3 points per game and second in total offense. It starts at quarterback with Pro Bowler Matt Hasselbeck. He is Mike Holmgren’s boy and has learned the system inside and out. The team has the league’s best at running back in Shaun Alexander. He puts up big numbers and finally got the contract he deserved after putting up an NFL record 28 touchdowns last year. The Seahawks have three capable receivers when they can stay healthy, which has been an issue in year’s past. Nate Burleson, Darrell Jackson, and Bobby Engram will be able to scare opposing secondaries only if all three of them are taking the field together.

Defensively the team is average and just tried to contain the opposition so the offense can outscore them. The line is deep at tackle and shallow at end, but this is the team that led the league in sacks last season and the front four was a big reason why. Grant Wistrom and Bryce Fisher are both solid ends, but tackles Marcus Tubbs and Chuck Darby are among the best in the game. Peterson coming in as the strong side linebacker solidifies this unit, who has Pro Bowler Lofa Tatupu in the middle and Leroy Hill on the other side. The secondary has now become the weakest part of the defense with rookie Kelly Jennings expected to head right in and start. Safeties Michael Boulware and Ken Hamlin are talented but Hamlin hasn’t played since the incident outside of a nightclub early last season.

Seattle has the potential to make the Super Bowl once again this season. The division should basically be a lock with the other three teams just not making enough moves to catch the Seahawks. You can get the team at a pretty good value, as long as you don’t believe in the curse, at Over 10.5 +120 right now.
