2006 Steelers FootballGet ready for the season with our 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers Predictions & Preview! After picking up one for the thumb, the 2006 Steelers football team wants to pick up another Super Bowl ring while the opportunity is there. The team lost a lot from a year ago, especially in there emotional locker room leader Jerome Bettis. He wasn't as effective of a running back as he was in his heyday, but when it came to short yardage situations he was as bruising as ever. The team lost a little in it's secondary as well with the departure of safety Chris Hope to the Titans, and it might be a year or two before first round draft choice Santonio Holmes picks up where Antwaan Randle El left off before departing to the Giants. The only real offensive question marks for the 2006 Steelers football team are how Ben Roethlisberger reacts to his off-season motorcycle accident, if Willie Parker can keep up his 4.7 ypc average this season, and if the Black and Gold can keep providing a new 2nd option at wide receiver. We don't think that Big Ben is going to have much of a problem stepping in where he left off as all indications are that his face injuries are going to be fine by the pre-season. Will he be more focuses? Probably, as having success early in the career can make some lackadaisical, Ben will probably have a new outlook on life after the accident and he'll probably be better off because of it. Willie Parker was great last year for the Steelers, and they are hoping that Duce Staley can finally get healthy enough to spell him in relief. As good as the offensive line is, we don't think the Steelers are going to have any problems moving the ball on the ground. The Steelers have now lost Burress and Randle El the last two years, but Santonio Holmes and Cedrick Wilson are both speedy guys that Pitt was able to pick up in the draft.
The offense hasn't carried this team in the past, and the 2006 Steelers football faithful will most likely be looking at the defense to win games this year. The line is almost as good as any team in the league with Casey Hampton and Aaron Smith capable of making the Pro Bowl in any given year. Pittsburgh has always put out a good group of linebackers and they have the best core in the league again this season with the loud-mouthed Joey Porter leading the way. The other outside linebacker is Clark Haggans, who kind of snuck up on opponents focusing in on Porter to compile 9 sacks in 2005. The four starters have remained in tact for the last two seasons, and that experience will pay off with another solid year. The secondary is the weakness of this team, but it has one of the best players in the game at strong safety with Troy Polamalu. He is versatile and hard hitting, making his presence known on the field. The defensive backs are going to have to step it up this season so that the Steelers can continue to blitz opposing quarterbacks and put pressure on offenses. Expectations are going to be high again in Pittsburgh, but we think that the AFC is so competitive that one of the hungrier teams is going to come out on top. The Pats are going to be a force this season and the Colts are going to be the team to beat. Pittsburgh can make another run at defending their title, but chances are they are just going to have another solid season and exit the playoffs in the divisional round. The 2006 Steelers football schedule includes the difficult NFC South with trips to Carolina and Atlanta, so they may not be able to get the home field that they need. Then again, they won every single road game on their way to the 2005 Super Bowl title. With Pittsburgh being the most likely to win the division, but still going into every game with a target on their back, we are going to take the Under for their win total with 10.5 being the number at Bookmaker.
