2006 Vanderbilt Football Picks & Predictions
How is the 2006 Vanderbilt Commodores football team going to react without one of the best quarterbacks in school history under center? Read our college football predictions to find out. Jay Cutler was the best quarterback in the SEC last season and led the team to five wins, including a big victory over the Vols in Knoxville. The offense returns six starters as does the defense, and the slack in the offense should be picked up with improvements on the other side of the ball.
The favorite to take over for Cutler is sophomore Chris Nickson, who is a great athlete but may not be the best threat through the air. Red shirt freshman Mackenzi Adams is also in the mold of being more of a threat with his feet than his arms, so it’ll be unsure who emerges and what damage they can do. Whoever is throwing the ball, they need to make sure they find sophomore receiver Earl Bennett. He is one of the best in the nation and will be able to put up big numbers again if he gets the ball. Cassen Jackson-Garrison is more than capable of running the ball, but there are going to be questions surrounding the offensive line.
The defensive line was a weakness last year and led to the team ranking 11th in the SEC and 82nd in the nation against the run. This year they have more talent on the line, especially with tackle Theo Horrocks and end Chris Booker to help develop the group. At linebacker the team is talented in their first line but they lack depth, so if any of the three go down then Vandy will be hurting. The secondary is full of questions with three sophomores and a freshman likely manning the four spots. Look for teams to try and throw often against the Commodores this year.
The schedule is brutal for Vandy so do not expect any sort of run for a bowl bid. They’ll get wins at home against Tennessee State, Kent State, and probably when they go to Duke. Other than that the team is going to have to upset any of the other teams to gain any ground. You are more than likely going to find Vanderbilt sitting at the bottom of the SEC East.
