2006 Virgina Tech Football Picks & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on August 11, 2006

We here at Locksmith Sports making our college football predictions think that the 2006 Virginia Tech football team will take a back seat to Miami in the ACC Coastal division as the Hokies will be hurting at the quarterback position. Legal problems forced Marcus Vick to enter the NFL and Tech’s remaining QB’s have only combined for 23 pass attempts. It also doesn’t look good that the Hokies lost the bulk of their offensive line to graduation and tailback Brandon Ore’s health has been an issue as his surgically repaired shoulder could be a major problem this season. If Sean Glennon would step up and take control of the Hokie offense, you might see Frank Beamer do the hokie pokie on the sideline. However, Glennon is not head and shoulders above the other contenders and I’m sure the quarterback issue will have Beamer sweating all season.

Thank God the Hokies have a solid defense which will keep them ahead of the rest of the pack in the ACC Coastal. In fact the Hokies had the number 1 total defense in the country last season giving up just 247.7 yards per game. They were also the 2nd ranked scoring defense, 8th against the rush, and 3rd against the pass. Not only is the first string good, the second string is good too, especially up front. The defensive line will wear down opposing offensive fronts with fresh legs from lots of substituting. And we can’t forget about linebackers Vince Hall and Xavier Adibi. You will hear their names mentioned plenty this season by experts talking about the nation’s best inside backers. The secondary is stacked despite losing All-American Justin Williams. Expect big things out of strong safety Aaron Rouse, who will lay big hits in run support and pass coverage.

Virginia Tech lucks out on their non-conference schedule this season as Northeastern, North Carolina, Duke, and Cincinnati will be pushovers. Kent State will also provide a nice late season break on November 11th. As far as conference games go, the Hokies will have trouble with Georgia Tech and Clemson and will likely lose 1 of those 2 as well as to Miami on the road November 4th. A 10-2 season is still a safe bet despite the offensive question marks because of Virginia Tech’s stacked defense. Take the over 9.5 regular season wins at Bodog and rest easy as Frank Beamer’s team will get to a major bowl again this season.
