2007 Alabama Football Picks & Predictions

The offense for Nick Saban’s first year as head coach is going to look similar to Mike Shula’s last with nine starters returning. John Parker Wilson enters his junior season coming off a year he had 2,707 yards and 17 touchdowns. He’ll also have two top receivers in DJ Hall and Keith Brown back along with the entire offensive line. Wilson will have to be smarter with the ball, and Saban will most likely take advantage of his running ability a little more. Both Hall and Brown are talented but have had difficulties when it comes to staying on the field in years past. With Kenneth Darby gone, there isn’t a real solid option at tailback, but sophomore Glen Coffee most likely will beat out Jimmy Johns for the starting role.

Wallace Gilberry and Bobby Greenwood give the Tide a couple of talented ends which will have to get to the passer a little more than the 13 times they did a season ago. There isn’t a lot of size up front though. Linebacker is a position in transition with Prince Hall coming back from a successful freshman year, but Zeke Knight was an end a year ago and will be playing on the outside this year. Safety was a weakness of last year’s team, but the team has three guys who can all fill in and improve on last year’s performance. Simeon Castille is a better than average corner who will have the chance to shut down the opposition’s best pass catcher.

There is a lot of hope for Nick Saban’s return to the SEC and for good reason. This team will most likely finish third in the SEC West, but could get to 10 or 11 wins with a few breaks going their way. The game we see the Tide having the most trouble with is when they host the LSU Tigers the first weekend in November. Home stands against Arkansas, Georgia, and Tennessee will be huge, as will their last game of the year when they head to Auburn. Winning more of those games than they lose, and taking down Florida State in Jacksonville at the end of September will whet the fans’s appetite for the Saban era to come.
