Willie Tuitama healthy makes a big difference for this team because with him under center the team managed to beat BYU, California, Oregon, and Washington State. The problem was he had several concussions and had to miss too many games. The offensive line is young, but three started last year as freshman so Tuitama should get better protection. Arizona is going to a spread offense this year, so the departure of Chris Henry to the NFL isn’t that big of a loss. The passing numbers should improve as long as the receivers can catch the ball.
The defense returns ten starters and has seniors with experience up and down the roster. The line is deep and talented, but the strength of the squad is at linebacker with Spencer Larsen and Ronnie Palmer, both of who will be getting all-conference honors at the end of the year. There is plenty of experience at corner and the safety spot is talented but kind of young. If the offense can give the defense a little bit of rest then this should be a better than average unit once again.
Last year Mike Stoops lead the Wildcats to a 6-6 record, but only 4-5 in the Pac-10. The problems came on the offensive side of the ball, but they seemed to find themselves on that side of the ball towards the end of the year. With so many players back on offense we think they’ll continue the upward trend. The schedule isn’t going to allow the team to improve to the top of the conference however, but a bowl game is in the works if they can win a couple of close games. Going to California, Oregon State, and USC are going to most likely result in losses, and a home stand against UCLA will probably find Arizona an underdog. The key games come at the end of the season when they host Oregon and head to Arizona State. Winning those two games will mean this season is a successful one.
