The Sun Devils had a gunning, pass-heavy attack last year, but Erickson wants to feature the running game and this year that will mean Ryan Torain should build on the 1,229 yards he had on the ground a year go.  The veteran offensive line he'll be running behind will help those numbers and should put Torain in the first round of next year's NFL draft.  Rudy Carpenter was excellent as a freshman, but struggled last year do to poor health and a receiving corps that dropped way too many passes.  There aren't many receivers that can step up this year as it's the weakest unit on the team.

Arizona State has to find a way to stop the opposition if they will have any chance of getting to a bowl game this year.  The front seven is small and weak, which means opposing teams with a good ground game should be licking their chops lining up against this team.  There isn't a playmaker at linebacker, and the top returning tackler is Josh Barrett at safety, meaning too many runners are getting past the linebackers.  Barrett is the best player on the team, but the pass defense is going to struggle since corner is so thin and doesn't have much talent.

Arizona State finished at 7-6 a year ago and 4-5 in the Pac-10.  They then went out and hired Dennis Erickson which should help speed along the program.  Erickson will have an easy schedule to start the year, which should help the players grow confident in his system and develop some new starters on defense.  The team does get Oregon State, California, USC, and Arizona at home, but they will be underdogs against each of those teams except maybe the Wildcats.  A pair of road games against Oregon and UCLA will also be tough contests for the Sun Devils to win, leading us to believe another 6-6 season is in the works.
