College Bowl Predictions2007 Armed Forces Bowl Odds & PredictionsAir Force and California will kick off the 2007 Armed Forces Bowl at 12:30 EST on December 31st live from Fort Worth, Texas and televised nationwide on ESPN. This bowl started out as the Fort Worth Bowl, but throughout it's history there have been mostly blowouts, with the Conference USA teams taking the brunt of those beatings. This year's game should be a little bit closer with the contrasting styles of Air Force's ground game and California's passing attack. If you want to know who is going to cover the spread you'll have to pick up Jimmy Boyd's college bowl picks, but if you want to know more about the game and handicap it yourself then finish reading this preview.
Air Force comes into this game at 9-3 straight up (SU) and 9-2 against the spread (ATS). Bettors made a lot of money backing the Falcons this season as they exceeded expectations week in and week out. Troy Calhoun did a great job riding the option ground attack to a second-place finish in the Mountain West Conference. Chad Hall is the biggest threat as he led the team in both rushing and receiving yards on his way to 15 scores. He was the MWC Offensive Player of the Year and helped Air Force average more than 299 yards per game (ypg) on the ground, good for second in the nation. There were plenty of upsets to go around as the Falcons took down Utah and TCU early in the year as underdogs, then as a favorite towards the end of the season against teams like Notre Dame. Along with the rushing game, the defense was pretty strong as well and did a great job of creating turnovers. California had high hopes to start the season when they won their first five games and jumped up to no. 2 in the national rankings. The season didn't end so well for Jeff Tedford's squad as they went 1-6 to finish up at 6-6. The problem was turnovers as they were committing way too many and not getting enough from their defensive unit. The losses were painful as they could have been no. 1 before losing to Oregon State at home, then got beat by Washington, and ended the year by getting shot down by Stanford. The Bears had mid-season title hopes and are now just lucky to make the bowl season. It seems like odds makers are still favoring the Bears over the under-rated Falcons as the talent level is so much that Cal is nearly a full touchdown favorite.
