2007 Atlanta Falcons Predictions & Season Preview

Check out our 2008 Atlanta Falcons NFL Predictions & Preview!

The Atlanta Falcons have been a tough team to figure out and the 2007 season will be another mystery to unravel.  This team was close to making the Super Bowl a few years ago, but has had a pair of disappointing ends to the last two years that cost Jim Mora his job.  Now the team will turn to former Louisville coach Bobby Petrino, despite the fact that success in the college ranks has translated into no such thing recently in the NFL.  This is Mike Vick's team and they will go as far as he can take them, but fans have to be worried without a solid backup now that Matt Schaub is gone.

Petrino thinks that his system will benefit Vick and will cause him to have a breakout year.  The trouble is with Vick's off-the-field problems and if he can put them behind him.  The guy also needs his receivers to stop dropping passes so he can find a rhythm and develop some confidence.  This is the year Vick needs to prove doubters wrong, but we doubt he has the skills to excel at quarterback.  Petrino is moving to a power running game instead of the zone blocking scheme used by Mora, but his backs aren't suited as well for that system.  Warrick Dunn has been solid the last two years, but expect his numbers to drop.  Michael Jenkins and Roddy White have been busts in their first couple years in the league.  Both need big years to prove they have what it takes to be an NFL no. 1.  Joe Horn was signed but he's getting up their in years so how much can he provide?  Alge Crumpler is as good as it gets for the team in terms of pass catching and he should be the go-to guy yet again.

The defense struggled against the pass last season.  They drafted Jamaal Anderson out of Arkansas to replace Patrick Kerney, but an injury to Rod Coleman leaves a big hole in the middle and Grady Jackson will most likely not be with the team as well.  John Abraham is Pro Bowl caliber at the other end spot if he can stay healthy.  Expect trouble out of the front four this year for the Falcons.  At linebacker the team is set in the middle with Keith Brooking, who had 136 tackles last season and Michael Boley on the strong side.  The other outside linebacker spot is up for grabs with Demorrio Williams still recovering from a torn pec.  Atlanta should be set at corner with DeAngelo Hall being one of the best in the NFC and the top corner in this year's draft, Chris Houston out of Arkansas.  Jimmy Williams will start on the other side of Hall unless he needs to move to safety, where Chris Cocker struggled.  Lawyer Millow fills the other safety spot, and is still productive despite getting up there in service time.

Wow, what are the odds makers thinking giving us 7.5 wins to work with for the Falcons.  This team will most likely finish with 6, maybe 7, but it's very unlikely for the team to get to .500 with the changes Petrino is making and the loss of a couple of key players on defense.  This is a best bet for Jimmy with the UNDER, and he recommends staying away from the props to do any damage in the playoffs.  Of course you can get best bets every weekend on the latest NFL odds by signing up for our NFL picks.  Don't start the season down, sign up today and get winning out of the gates.
