2007 Baylor Bears Football Preview & Predictions
It's time for Jimmy Boyd's 2007
Baylor Bears football preview and predictions
article. Guy Moriss is running out of time to make
things happen at Baylor, and this is most likely the
last year he remains on the sidelines at the school
since he wasn't given an extension and faces losing
seven starters on offense and most of the secondary.
A quarterback has to emerge from the pack since there
are a lot of talented receivers, but it's going to be
tough to keep up with the opposition the way the defense
will most likely hemorrhage points. This team
hasn't won more than 3 games in the Big 12 conference in
any season, so we are not expecting that to change this
season, in fact a single victory would probably be an
upset.

There is a battle going on at quarterback this year with the front runner
being Kent State senior transfer Michael Machen. Machen is making Baylor
his fourth school attended and has yet to emerge as a star at any other place.
However, Blake Szymanski wasn't all that impressive throwing seven interceptions
to only four touchdowns as a fill-in a year ago, and junior college transfer
John David Weed isn't a likely star, leaving Machen the man by default. He
will have a talented group of receivers to throw to, led by Thomas White, Ernest
Smith, and Mikail Baker at wideout and Justin Akers and Carl Sims at the slot
position. Brandon Whitaker was a bigger threat catching the ball than
running it a year ago and is the leading returning receiver. With Baylor
only gaining 40.2 ypg to finish last in college football a year ago, he doesn't
have to do much to improve the team's ground game.
The defense was just puke last year when they gave up 32.6 ppg and 408.2
total yards per contest. It's going to be more of the same most likely for
the Bears this year as the secondary was killed by graduation, retaining only
one of their five defensive backs. The worst part about that is the pass
defense could actually halfway hold it's own and force a few turnovers along the
way. Joe Pawelek is the bright spot in the middle of the linebacking corps
with 86 tackles as a freshman, and he's helped out by Nick Moore on the outside.
The team can get some push up the middle with tackle Vincent Rhodes, but the
ends will need to get a little pressure. Geoff Nelson is the leading sack
man returning with 2.5 sacks at the end spot.
