The team we think to beat in the Big Ten this season
will be the Wisconsin
Badgers. Sure they lost the reliable John
Stocco and a beast of a lineman in Joe Thomas, but this
team still has enough back to be potent on offense.
The schedule is what helps them more than anything, a
trip to Ohio State, but a home stand against Michigan.
The reason we are going with the
Michigan
Wolverines for the second place finish is that they
have to head to Wisconsin, and the home field will be
the difference. Three great skill players in Henne,
Hart, and Manningham will help them put points on the
board, but this team lost a lot on defense. Still,
expect a top 10 finish in the nation this year.
A dropoff is coming for the
Ohio State
Buckeyes, but after last season's successes this
isn't hard to believe. A quarterback needs to
emerge because the running game should be fine behind an
experienced line. The defense has a fierce group
of linebackers returning, but the line and secondary are
raw. Good thing they have plenty of games before
facing anyone tough.
Happy Valley has big hopes for the
Penn State
Nittany Lions this year, and while we think they are
a top 25 team, winning the Big Ten might be a stretch.
The defense has a lot of holes to fill, but the young
talent will help. Offensively the eight starters
need to improve over a year ago, and an early game
against Michigan will come before this team can gel.
Expect a middle of the pack finish.
A team to look out for this year might be the
Iowa Hawkeyes.
A newcomer at quarterback has the experts forgetting
about a talented ground game and good group of
receivers. This defense struggled last year but
with a lot of returning leaders from a year ago, and
missing out on Michigan and Ohio State on the schedule
has us eyeing this team as a sleeper.
A lot of people feel good about the
Purdue
Boilermakers this year since they return nine
players on both sides of the ball. However there
defense was bad last year and lost their best player,
and even the sixth ranked passing offense in the nation
couldn't make up for their struggles. Expect more
excitement when this team hits the field, both by
scoring and being scored upon.
Another exciting team will be the
Indiana Hoosiers,
but they too will have trouble stopping anyone.
With excellent skill players and a quarterback who is
continueing to learn how to play at the collegiate
level, points will come in buckets. If only the
defense could stop someone, which isn't going to be
likely as you'll see plenty of totals set at 60 or
beyond for this squad.
With the
Northwestern Wildcats you are going to get a team
that is hoping for a bowl and could get it without
Wisconsin or Penn State on the schedule. With
seven homes games big things are planned if the offense
can regroup like the staff thinks it can.
We don't see a whole lot of good things out of the
Illinois Illini
this season, but if Ron Zook can keep recruiting like he
has in the past then it won't take long for this team to
get out of the basement of the conference.
However, this isn't going to be that year as the team
will struggle to get a single win in the league play.
The
Michigan State Spartans have one of the toughest
schedules in the Big Ten and this will force them
towards the bottom of the league. The new coaching
staff thinks the defense will be improved over a year
ago, and there is talent on offense but it's going to
take a year or two for this team to get back going
again.
With a new coaching staff generating a lot of excitement
for the
Minnesota Gophers, people are hoping for a lot this
season. They aren't going to get it as we don't
see Minnesota being favored in a single conference game.
Give this team a few years to turn things around.
