2007 Big 12 Football Preview & PredictionsNow take a look at our 2008 Big 12 Football Predictions! Get ready for another great season of college football betting with Jimmy Boyd's 2007 Big 12 football preview and predictions article. We see two teams emerging to the front of the pack this year as the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners will both be contending for a national title. In the Big 12 North you'll most likely see the Nebraska Cornhuskers emerge and meet up with the South champ in the Big 12 Championship game. Below is a general overview of what we think of each school, but if you want more just click down to a more detailed writeup.
Texas is loaded on both sides of the ball as Mack Brown continues to recruit the best talent in the nation. Colt McCoy has emerged as a start and he has a talented running back and receivers to help carry the load. The schedule should allow for this team to make a run at the national title. The only team standing in the Longhorns's way is Oklahoma. The Sooners need to find an answer at quarterback, but if they do then the defense is good enough to be ranked near the top of the national ranks. Nebraska is going to be a force when it comes to the Big 12 North, but it's going to have some tough games against USC and Texas. Still things look to be on the way up for Callahan in Lincoln. One team that might be overlooked in this conference, but not by us is the Texas A&M Aggies. This team has plenty of weapons on offense to go with an experienced line. The result is going to be a lethal squad who puts up points and doesn't turn the ball over. The defense has some standouts on it, and the secondary is young, but with a majority of backs returning from last year. Watch this team closely. One team that isn't going to have any trouble scoring points this year is the Missouri Tigers. With one of the best quarterbacks in all of football and nearly everyone on offense back, expect to see a few shootouts coming out of Columbia. Defensively there are question marks, but getting the Huskers at home could be the difference maker when it comes to determining who wins the Big 12 North. The Oklahoma State Cowboys will have plenty of talent on the offensive side of the ball, and they are going to need it to make up for a weak defensive unit. This team will score a lot of points, but with the tough games on their schedule we don't see them having the defense to allow them to win many games. Still, a bowl is likely as is an above .500 record. We see the third place team in the Big 12 North being the Kansas State Wildcats. This team struggled at times last season with a freshman quarterback, but he should develop into a better player this year. The holes on defense were filled up by top junior college talent, making this team a possible threat to win the Big 12 North, however their schedule is difficult. A solid bowl would be a good second year for head coach Ron Prince. There are just too many talented offensive teams now in the Big 12 for the Texas Tech Red Raiders to get by without a better defense. Sure you'll see them near the top of the nation in passing yards and points, but you'll also see them as one of the worst run defenses and scoring defenses in the nation. The Big 12 South is too tough to get by without playing both sides of the ball. While the Kansas Jayhawks have made big strides under Mark Mangino, this team still isn't ready to compete with the rest of the Big 12. Last year if they caught some breaks we might be talking about the defending Big 12 North champions, but with Missouri and Nebraska so far above the rest of this division, you won't be able to say that at the end of this year. Dan Hawkins came in and gave the Colorado Buffaloes hope of a new era. It didn't start according to plan and we don't see this year going well either. Hawkins is going to be a year or two away from having this team competing in the North and for major bowls. That day is coming, but it isn't happening in 2007. With a new head coach that has done great things on defense, there are a few hopeful of big things from the Iowa State Cyclones. However, we don't see that happening with how bad both sides played last season. The schedule is one of the toughest in the Big 12, and will make it tough for this team to even approach the middle of the North division. At the bottom of the conference is once again the Baylor Bears. Not only does this team have the least amount of talent, but their schedule is always brutal as the South is packed with good teams again this year. It's tough to see a change coming in the future, as this team has never fared well in the Big 12.
