2007 Big East Football Preview & Predictions

With Jimmy Boyd's 2007 Big East football preview and predictions you have to look at West Virginia, Louisville, and Rutgers because these are three teams that will have a chance to compete on the national scene.  A lot of people look past this conference because it's known as the weakest of the BCS leagues, but with three teams emerging you can't consider this division a stepping stone any longer.  Get ready for the season with our detailed previews covering each school.

The team we think is the best of the bunch are the West Virginia Mountaineers.  With two of the best players in college football and a pretty favorable schedule, it's tough for us to imagine anyone sneaking up on this team.  By the end of October everyone will be making this team a factor in the national rankings.

We hope that you don't think the season Rutgers had last year was a fluke, because if you do then you'll get killed going against them this year.  This team has the talent on defense to keep the school close to any opponent, plus with Heisman contender Ray Rice carrying the offensive load we don't expect problems here.

With the other two teams being so talented it's easy for some to forget about Louisville.  Bobby Petrino is gone to Atlanta to deal with the Vick situation, leaving Steve Kragthrope.  This guy wants to get the defense on pace with one of the best offenses in the nation, but Brian Brohm is good enough to win big games with only a little help from the other side of the ball.

A team the general public might overlook is the South Florida Bulls.  Last year was a turnaround season with a 9-4 record and the first bowl victory in school history.  With 15 starters returning and a lot of talent on both sides of the ball, this team could knock off one of the Big 3 above.

The Cincinnati Bearcats are a pretty big step below SFU, as is the rest of the Big East.  This team shouldn't threaten for a conference title, but with the talent on the team there is a chance for a big upset or two.  There are just too many holes to be able to compete with the league's elite on a weekly basis.

Dave Wannstedt hasn't been able to turn around the Pittsburgh Panthers, and this year problems on his defense will make it tough to get to .500.  He just doesn't have the talent on the team to manage this difficult schedule, but given a couple of years this program will be heading in the right direction.

Near the bottom of the conference is Connecticut.  This team doesn't have a whole lot of wins on the schedule, especially in Big East play.  The good news for Huskies fans is that the game against Syracuse is at home, so the Orange will most likely end up as the team in last place in the conference.
