2007 Boise State College Football Picks & Predictions

Jimmy Boyd takes a look at one of last year’s surprise teams with his 2007 Boise State Broncos football preview and predictions article. This team surprised everyone a year ago by going 13-0, beating Oklahoma in the most exciting football game of the entire year to win the Fiesta Bowl. This team will have all the parts in place for another great run if they can get off to a fast start in September. A trip to Washington the second week followed by a home game against Southern Miss will be early tests before a schedule that should allow them to run the table leading up to the finale when they travel to Hawaii. Nobody should be surprised if this team makes it to another BCS-Bowl, but we will all be shocked if they lose more than a couple of games, even if they suffer a bunch of bad breaks.

The offense loses Jared Zabransky, but junior Bush Hamdan has impressed coaches in winning a four way race for the starting spot. He has got a strong-arm and is an emotional leader who has cut down on his mistakes. There shouldn’t be a huge drop off here, especially since the team will be relying on the running game. Ian Johnson is another one of those guys who we think could win the Heisman if voters give him as much credit for a weaker schedule. This guy ran for 1,713 yards and 25 touchdowns a year ago on 277 carries and really emerged as a star in the win over Oklahoma. He finished eighth in the voting a year ago but won’t be that far down if he puts up anywhere near the same numbers this season, which he should do. The offensive line is ready to help him dominate with four returning starters and plenty of top conference selections. At receiver the team lost a number of good receivers but coaches think Vinny Perretta and Jeremy Childs will be ready to fill the hole. Perreta is a talented athlete that can do it all while Childs was one of the top recruits in Boise State history.

The front four has talent at the end spots with Mike Williams, a great pass rusher who had 4 sacks in 2006, and Nick Schlekeway, who is undersized but has a motor that just won’t quit, but the tackle positions isn’t very deep nor loaded with talent. At linebacker the team has plenty of depth and talent, but these guys have lacked consistency in the past. If the group doesn’t want to continue rotating 6 or 7 guys in and out of the game, someone has to show they can get it done every down. Marty Tadman is the leader of the secondary and one of the best defensive players in the conference. Jason Robinson will start at the other safety spot and coaches love how hard he hits, while the corner positions should be solid with Orlando Scandrick and Kyle Wilson.
