2007 St. Louis Cardinals Predictions

Take a look at our 2008 St. Louis Cardinals Predictions!

St. Louis threw everybody for a loop last season by barely finishing above 500 but winning the 2006 World Series. They won 100 or more games each of the previous two seasons but couldn’t get the job done in the playoffs. How did the Cards pull off such a feat last season? Their starting pitching came together at just the right time.

Starting pitching will once again be what makes or breaks the Cards in 2007 as the offense will still pack a punch with Albert Pujols, Scott Rolen, and Jim Edmonds. The defense is top-notch and always makes the pitching staff look even better than it is. Pujols at first and Rolen at third makes up the best corners combination in baseball, and up the middle the Cards are solid as a rock from Molina behind the plate to Edmonds in center.

The Cards’ rotation has a different look to it this season with four unproven starters to go along with Chris Carpenter. Carpenter won the Cy Young Award in 2005 and finished third last season. He’ll be among the best in the game again in 2007. Former Pirate and Ranger Kip Wells has showed promise. Three seasons ago he had the best home ERA in the NL for the Pirates, but he has just a 57-74 career record. Perhaps a better offensive team will help him have a breakout year. The Cards are expecting big things from Adam Wainright who was sensational as a rookie out of the pen. They’ll be some growing pains here. Anthony Reyes and Ryan Franklin, who comes over from Seattle, will get every opportunity to land one of the last two spots, but the Cards will be praying for a fast recovery for Mark Mulder to give them one lefty in their starting five. At this point, with Isringhausen back healthy after hip surgery, the pen looks to be more solid than the starting rotation. Watch how quickly the world champs will fall if their starters do not get the job done.

Offensively, it’s Edmonds, Pujols, and Rolen in the middle of their order that is going to do the most damage to opposing teams. The Cards will hope Molina’s postseason success will give him the confidence to have a breakout year. Eckstein is a guy the Cards will really need to come up big for them. They need more production out of this guy and better than a .255 average with runners in scoring position.

The 2007 Cards will have their work cut out for themselves to win the Central, let alone get back to the World Series. They’ll start the season with a better lineup than they started with in 2006, but the starting pitching staff remains a big question mark going into opening day. The one thing that St. Louis does have going for itself is that this team knows how to win. Experience could be the Cards best friend in 2007.

If you’re a Cardinals backer, you aren’t going to want to ride the Red Birds right out of the gate. Watch this team in the early going to see how their pitchers develop. But if you can find good value spots to back the Cards with Carpenter on the hill, I suggest you do so.
