College Bowl Predictions2007 Champs Sports Bowl Odds & PredictionsGet ready to beat the 2007 Champs Sports Bowl odds with this preview by Jimmy Boyd and the Locksmith Sports staff. This game will once again be played on Orlando, Florida and be televised on ESPN when it takes place on December 28th at 5 EST. Boston College comes into this game at 10-3 straight up (SU) while Michigan State is 7-5 SU, but the odds makers have made the Eagles only a 3.5 point chalk. A lot of the betting public has been all over the Eagles, but we are going to give a balanced report with this article. Last year Maryland beat Purdue 24-7, even though this bowl has commitments to the Big 12 and ACC. The Big 12 has had problems getting enough quality teams so the Big Ten has been extended invites the last two seasons. For those die hard fans out there, you might remember this bowl started back in 1990 as the Tangerine Bowl before changing it's name to the Champs Sports Bowl in 2004.
At the end of November, Boston College was 8-0 and sitting at no. 2 in the polls. Their quarterback, Matt Ryan, was the top choice for the Heisman Trophy, and everything seemed to be going great. Then the Eagles finished out the year losing three of their last five games, including the ACC Championship that would have put them into a BCS game. A lot of that was due to Ryan throwing more picks than touchdowns, and a pass defense that couldn't stop anyone. Still, this team does have a quarterback who threw for more than 4200 yards and will go pretty high in this year's NFL draft, and they have a solid backfield duo who can provide some much needed balance. The problem is that while BC allows only 68 rushing yards per game, their secondary gives up almost 270 ypg through the air. This defect along with finishing the season looking pretty care-free after losing their shot at a BCS game gives us a couple reasons to doubt they can cover. Michigan State isn't exactly a title contending team with their 7-5 record, but they did pull off some upsets, including in their regular season finale against Penn State. The team is balanced on offense with a running back duo of Jaosn Caulcrick and Javon Ringer racking up a combined 2,157 yards and 27 touchdowns. Quarterback Brian Hoyer has a real threat at wideout in Devin Thomas, a guy who put up 255 yards and 17 grabs to go with three touchdowns in the final two games. But offense hasn't been a problem for the Spartans, it's the defense that is giving them trouble as they were giving up 33 ppg in the Big Ten. With the experience on Boston College's offense, the Eagles shouldn't have any trouble putting up points against the Spartans. Some interesting trends: Michigan State is 4-2 ATS in their last six games Boston College is just 1-4 ATS in their last five games Oddsmakers predicted score: Michigan State Spartans 26 2007 Champs Sports Bowl Odds: Michigan State Spartans
