2007 Cincinnati Football Picks & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on August 19, 2007

Get ready for the upcoming season with Jimmy Boyd’s college football predictions in his 2007 Cincinnati Bearcats preview article. This is a team that has some holes to go with a great deal of talent. Last year this team finished 8-5 with road games at Ohio State and Virginia Tech, which this year’s edition won’t have to cope with. That doesn’t mean that doing better than a year ago is a lock, since the team still has Oregon State at home and has four tough Big East games traveling to Rutgers, Pittsburgh, and South Florida with home stands against both Louisville and West Virginia. The team is going to need an upset or two like they got against the Scarlet Knights last year if they want to contend for the conference title, but this team is a year or two away from a real chance at a BCS Bowl.

We are looking to see the offense open up quite a bit more under first year head coach Brian Kelly, but this is only going to work if Ben Mauk can come in and get a quick grasp on the system. Mauk transferred over from Wake Forest for his senior year and the Bearcats are hoping his strong arm can resurrect a non-existent passing offense. At running backs the team has reliable contributors but no real standout. Greg Moore will get the majority of the carries as he racked up 709 yards on 162 carries a year ago, but you’ll also see Butler Benton and Bradley Glatthaar in the backfield at times. The line is talented and should be alright, but they will be making some changes in switching from a run-first to a pass-first offense. Cincy is hoping a newcomer can emerge at wide receiver, because the only known right now is deep threat Dominick Goodman.

Last year’s team ranked 25th nationally against the run and brings back eight starters, so the team is confident a repeat performance is in the cards. All four of last year’s starters return up front, led by ends Anthony Hoke and Trevor Anderson, who had six sacks last year, to go with monster tackle Terril Byrd. The outside linebackers are also back, which are highlighted by Corey Smith, a talented athlete who was a freshman All-American two seasons ago and is the second-leading returning tackler. The secondary won’t have a lot of problems with the leadership of the hard hitting safety Haruki Nakamura along with excellent corner Mike Mickens, who was eigth nationally in passes defended a year ago.
