Cullen Harper takes over the quarterbacking duties and fans are excited about how he performed in the spring. He has a strong arm, patience, and has been around waiting in the wings for his chance. James Davis returns at tailback with his 1,187 yards and 17 touchdowns on only 203 carries from a year ago, but Clemson also has sophomore CJ Spiller providing a nice change of pace. If the ground game can repeat their 5th ranked performance from a year ago will depend on how the line can deal with the loss of four starters. There isn’t a receiver with a ton of experience which could give Harper problems throwing the ball.
The defensive line will have some question marks as well as Gaines Adams is off to the NFL. Ricky Sapp is a talent sophomore who takes his place and this guy had 4 sacks as a freshman. The linebacker group is a big question mark after the starters all either had personal family problems that caused them to miss time or had to take summer classes to get their grades up. If things go wrong here then the defense will have issues. The backfield will have plenty of talent, but this group is still pretty raw at corner. The safeties both return from last year’s squad.
The Tigers were 8-5 last year despite scoring 32.7 ppg and giving up just 16.2. With all the excitement entering last season, the inability to win close games cost this team a chance at the ACC Championship game and a BCS Bowl. This year’s team isn’t as talented and the schedule is more difficult. A home game against Florida State to start the season then at Georgia Tech to end the month of September will most likely be losses. The games they have to win are at Maryland and at NC State, or else this team will be looking at a losing record.
