Biggest Upsets in 2007 College Football
What a year it's
been, one unlike any we have ever
seen on the NCAA gridiron so we
thought it would be nice to look
back at what we thought were the
biggest upsets in 2007 college
football. We'll run down
the list from no. 5 down to the
biggest shocker of them all.

No. 5 - Illinois beat Ohio State - The Buckeyes had won 20
straight games in Big Ten conference play heading into their November 10th
showdown with Illinois. The line on this game was 15.5 points and Ohio
State was coming off a real beat down of a good Wisconsin Badgers team.
The Illini had lost three straight games and had only squeaked a win out against
the Badgers earlier in the year. Illinois then proceeded to rack up 260
yards rushing with Juice Williams throwing for four touchdowns as the Buckeye
faithful were shocked to see the 28-21 result on the scoreboard not in their
favor. Ohio State's title shot was all but over with two games left and
the Buckeyes falling to no. 7 in the rankings.
No. 4 - Arkansas beats LSU - The Tigers had already lost once in
2007 in a triple-overtime heartbreaker and the Razorbacks were looking for a
repeat of that outcome. On November 23rd, LSU had gotten over their
earlier defeat to get back to no. 1 in the rankings and were thirteen point
favorites to the Razorbacks. Arkansas was just 6-4 and had come off a
twenty point spanking at the hands of Tennessee. Darren McFadden though
decided to carry the load with 206 rushing yard and three touchdowns, plus an
additional touchdown coming via his arm. LSU's title hopes seems to
vanquish when they failed to get in the end zone on a two-point conversion in
the third extra frame.
No. 3 - Pittsburgh upsets West Virginia - It seemed like the
Mountaineers were a virtual lock to make it to the BCS title game when they took
on Pitt on December 1st. Not only was the home team favored by 28.5
points, but the Panthers were just 4-7 and had lost seven of their last nine
games. However the curse of the no. 2 seed bit for the third straight week
as Pittsburgh won 14-9. The offense ran up just 183 total yards in what
seemed like a nightmare game.
No. 2 - Appalachian State over Michigan - Now most people at the
time thought this was the biggest upset in the history of sports, but we don't
even think it qualifies as the top game of the year. Michigan thought they
were going to tune up for the regular season as they held the no. 5 ranking
against a I-AA team. The game didn't even have a line as no team from that
division had beaten a division I program. However, after jumping out to a
28-17 lead at half, the Wolverines fought back to take the lead by one with a
little over a minute to go. Appalachian State would just fold right?
Not so because even after turning the ball over and leaving Michigan in field
goal range, the Mountaineers blocked the FG, drove 68 yards, and kicked a
24-yarder of their own. The game wasn't over though as Chad Henne
completed a 46-yard pass to Mario Manningham to set up a 37-yard game winning
field goal, only to see the Mountaineers block that field goal try as well,
handing Michigan the tough loss.
No. 1 - Stanford takes down USC - The
college football odds were set at 41.
One of the biggest lines you will see in the season of
college football betting as
Stanford headed into Southern Cal on October 6th (Idaho was 49-point dogs to USC
this year as well). USC was still ranked no. 2 in the rankings but was
coming off a disappointing performance against Washington the week before.
John David Booty continued to struggle in this one by throwing four picks, the
biggest one coming with just 2:50 left and the Trojans up by six. Stanford
then went 45-yards to score the game winning touchdown and give USC a 24-23 loss
in front of their home crowd. This was the biggest spread upset of all
time, with the previous winner being Oregon State over Washington back in 1985
as 38-point dogs. That crazy Pac-10 conference does it again.
