2007 Colorado Buffaloes Football Preview & PredictionsOur 2007 Colorado Buffaloes football preview and predictions show a team that is headed in the right direction, but that doesn't mean that this is going to be the breakout year for Dan Hawkins and his kids. This team still has plenty of holes and we don't see any quick answers. Things can't get much worse than last year's 2-10 season as we see the teams being able to pick up wins at Baylor and at home against Miami of Ohio. If the Buffs can pick up victories at home against Colorado State and Kansas, then maybe sneak one out in Ames against the Iowa State Cyclones we are going to say they greatly overachieved. This team is at least one year away from going bowling.
The quarterback position is up for grabs between Cody Hawkins, son of head coach Dan Hawkins, and junior college transfer Nick Nelson. Hawkins is a redshirt freshman who sat on the sidelines last year in order to learn the offense inside and out. He is the front runner and will most likely get the job, but he has to go through the competition in order for the coach to not be accused of playing favorites. His development will most likely be rough from the start, but this guy is being bred to win in the future. Hugh Charles has potential to have a great year, if somebody can step up around him to take the pressure off. Last season he ran for 779 yards on 139 carries, but only had a touchdown. He's prone to injury, but if he's on the field this guy is fast and can break tackles, making him a real playmaker. Two spots that we are concerned about are at receiver and with the offensive line. Both have little experience, depth, and there appears to be a lack of talent at the positions. The defense was supposed to keep games close for the offense last year, but it didn't happen. The same expectations are going to be set on this unit again, but they have to find a way to stop the pass in order to be effective. Opposing passers completed 67% of their throws for 228.5 ypg, but the defense was stingy against the run, allowing just 3.3 ypc. The tackles return, so the run stuffing should continue, but better play is needed at end, the inside linebacker Jordon Dizon led the team in sacks with 4. Colorado doesn't want to rely on the blitz in order to generate pressure. Three of the four defensive backs return from last year, and Terrence Wheatley can be good, he had five picks a year ago. There needs to be more consistency and more pressure on the quarterback if the stats are going to improve.
