2007 Connecticut Football Picks & Predictions
Jimmy Boyd takes a look at one of the bottom feeders of the Big East with his 2007 Connecticut Huskies football preview and predictions article. The 2006 season was a tough one, with close wins over Indiana and Pittsburgh about the only bright spots on a team that went 1-6 in conference play. This year’s edition may not be much better in league play as the only game we see them as the favorite is at the end of the year when Syracuse comes visiting. We don’t see a bowl appearance in the cards, even with a relatively easy non-conference slate of games. This team needs to improve on both sides of the ball, but with the amount of young talent they could be only a year or two from making a run at the conference title.
The team had the worst passing attack in the Big East a year ago, and that unit ranked 110th in the nation with only 141 ypg. This year the quarterback spot is up for grabs between junior college All-American Tyler Lorenzen or sophomore Dennis Brown, but neither is going to be a star. Sophomore Donald Brown, who put up 134.6 ypg on the ground in five Big East starts, will give the team a great ground threat behind a healthier and more experienced line. The Huskies ranked 13th in the nation and 3rd in the conference with 183 ypg on the ground a year ago, and those numbers could go up if they get some balance from the quarterback position to keep defenders out of the box. At receiver there is Terence Jeffers, Brad Kanuch, and last year’s starting quarterback DJ Hernandez. These guys are all promising and should help bring up the numbers of the air attack.
The defense finally has the kind of speed and athleticism that it takes to compete in the Big East. This is good news for the fans since the team couldn’t generate enough pressure on the quarterback a year ago, causing problems for a secondary that had to cover the wideouts for way too long. Dan Davis is expected to do big things after moving from end to the inside and Julius Williams and Cody Brown both have enough speed at the end spots to give the opposition problems matching up. The linebacking corps is set with redshirt freshman Scott Lutrus joining the two leading tacklers from a year ago in seniors Danny Lansanah and Ryan Henegan. The safety position is a concern, but at the corner spot there is Darius Butler and Tyvon Branch, both guys who are better than average.
