Matthew Stafford had plenty of growing pains in Georgia's 9-4
2006 season, but those lessons should lead him to a better year this season.
He has great skills and ability, so as he becomes more patient and lets the game
come to him the team will have plenty of success through the air. The
running game has plenty of talent, and fullback is their best position with
Brannan Southerland who doesn't only punish opposing defenders with his blocks,
but he put up 10 TDs on his own. There is a stable of tailbacks as well,
led by Kregg Lumpkin who had almost 800 yards a year ago. A couple of
freshman will battle for playing time, and both have big play potential.
The line may be a problem with only two returning starters and a bunch of
freshman pushing the veterans.
Defensively the secondary was a strength a year ago but could be
a liability from the way things shook out in spring practice. Kelin
Johnson and Paul Oliver return to lead the safety and corner positions, but some
underclassmen are going to have to step up to complete the unit. The
linebacking corps are completely revamped with last year's only returner moving
from the outside to the middle in Brandon Miller. This group is fast
though and are a bunch of hard hitters. Up front there are a lot of
question marks, and stopping the run could be a problem. The defense needs
to perform better than expected for this group to achieve a high level of
success.
The key to the season is going to be the defense, and how the
front four performs. They'll have to stop the run and get pressure on the
quarterback. If this unit achieves then Georgia will contend for the SEC
East. If they don't then games at
Alabama, Tennessee, and
Georgia Tech could spell
trouble for them, along with a home stand against
Auburn and
Florida in Jacksonville. At least
they don't have LSU on the schedule this
year.
