2007 Hawaii Football Picks & Predictions
When you take a look at Jimmy Boyd’s college football predictions in his 2007 Hawaii Warriors preview you’ll be seeing a team that is going to have a shot at making a BCS-Bowl similar to Boise State a year ago. This team had the number ranking in scoring, passing, and total offense a year ago and has it’s major weapon in Colt Brennan back again. The staff believes that he’ll be improved, even if he doesn’t repeat last season’s record breaking performance when he had 5,549 yards and 58 touchdowns to go with only 12 interceptions. The schedule is pretty easy and Hawaii should be able to run the table before meeting up with Boise to end November, then it’s just a game against Washington to worry about, but all the big contests are on the island this year.
If the offense can repeat last year’s 46.9 ppg and 559.2 ypg then the team will better their 11-3 record from a year ago. Colt Brennan was sixth in the Heisman Trophy race a year ago and should be up there this season if the weak competition he faces gets any respect. There was talk of him going to the NFL after his record-setting junior campaign, but he’s back and will have plenty of weapons at his disposal. Three of the four starters are back at wide receiver with Davone Bess’s 96 catches for 1,220 yards and 15 TDs leading the way. He’ll also be joined by Jason Rivers and Ryan Grice-Mullen even though plenty of other guys saw time in this explosive offense. The line has some big holes to fill, but these backups got into the game a season ago so experience isn’t a problem even if they weren’t starters. A running back has to emerge from the pack as freshman Kealoha Pilares, who was Hawaii’s 2005 high school offensive player of the year, transferred over from the Air Force Academy and will most likely get the starting nod. Leon Wright-Jackson is a junior college transfer who played his first year at Nebraska and he’ll look to split some of the carries.
The defense returns eight starters but only one up front. Greg McMackin comes in as the new defensive coordinator as Jerry Glanville has moved on, and McMackin wants to return to the 4-3 defense from the previous regime’s 3-4. This year could be rough on the front four with the line being inexperienced except at tackle where Michale Lafaele is solid. The group of linebackers is strong though with a group that has started in the past and an end moving to outside linebacker. Adam Leonard and Soloman Elimimian should have their spots locked down as they have been all-conference in the past and are used to leading the team in tackles. Last year’s secondary was young, so this year’s returns three of four starters with plenty of experience so look for the unit to improve on their 105th ranking from a year ago.
