2007 Honda Classic Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on March 29, 2007

The Honda Classic is underway in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida at the PGA National Resort Champion Course and Jimmy Boyd has your 2007 Honda Classic Predictions right here. It comes as no surprise that, at 4 to 1 odds, the field is the favorite in this event with the world’s number two, Jim Furyk right behind at 6 to 1 odds. Luke Donald brought home the trophy in last season’s Honda Classic, but a repeat at PGA National figures to be out of the cards with the change in venues. The odds makers are showing the former champ some respect at 16 to 1 odds, but the Bear’s(Jack Nicklaus) course will likely eat him up.

With Tiger Woods not in the field, former Honda Classic champions will be starving for the first place prize money of $990,000. Joining Mr. Donald as past winners are Todd Hamilton, Justin Leonard, Matt Kuchar, Jesper Parnevik, Dudley Hart, Mark Calcavecchia, Tim Herron, Corey Pavin, Joey Sindelar, and Padraig Harrington. Mark Calcavecchia is the only two-time winner out of this group. I think we should be looking right past the former champs in favor of the top 25 golfers in the world. They are the ones playing the best golf right now and will have the best chances of rebounding from a tough round which this course is sure to cause. The seven top 25 golfers in this event are Padraig Harrington, Nick O’Hern, Davis Love III, David Toms, Chris DiMarco, Luke Donald, and, of course, Jim Furyk.

The nips and tucks that Jack Nicklaus gave to this course will not get rid of the wrinkles it is sure to cause for some of the best talents in the game. If we were going off history, we might be looking at former two-time winner Mark Calcavecchia, but this is really a new event with the change in courses. With the golf that Furyk is playing we have to think that he should finish near the top, but I don’t see him getting the job done. With Tiger not in the event, Furyk is the odds on favorite, but I think this hurts him more than helps him. When Tiger is playing, it takes some of the pressure off the other golfers because he is the one with the target on his back. Now that Furyk is wearing the target, I’m not convinced that he can get out of the way of the darts that his competitors will be throwing.

With the first round underway, of the favorites, Harrington and Furyk are off to fast starts sitting at two under and one under respectively. But the guy you should keep a close eye on is Davis Love III. We’re talking about a guy with one of the best golf swings in the game and he already has two top five finishes in just 5 events in 2007. I think his consistent swing and phenomenal short game puts him at the top of the leader board at the end of the day. Davis Love III is showing great value at 23 to 1 odds. If you have made him your man, you should be feeling great about your chances to collect on this event.
