2007 Humanitarian Bowl Odds & Predictions

On December 31st, 2007 at 2 PM EST in Boise, Idaho, Georgia Tech and Fresno State will kick off the 2007 Humanitarian Bowl.  The game will be played on the blue turf and televised on ESPN2.  The game is now called the MPC Computers bowl and will not feature Boise State this year.  The host team normally gets a decent sized school in here to beat up on, but they've already lost to East Carolina in the Hawaii Bowl this year.  If you want to find out who Jimmy Boyd thinks will win this game against the spread then you are going to have to pick up the college bowl picks package here at Locksmith Sports.

Georgia Tech may have Navy's Paul Johnson coming in next year, but this bowl game will be coached by a familiar face.  Defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta was a favorite to land the job that went to Johnson, and now the Jackets are fearing that he'll be headed to bigger and better things after being looked over.  Tenuta has been a big reason for the Yellow Jacket's success the past two seasons as the defense has had to carry the offense.  Tenuta's blitzing scheme generated 47.5 sacks and 110.5 tackles for losses, good for second in the nation.  His blitzes did a great job at stopping the run too as seven of the 12 Yellow Jacket opponents failed to hit the century mark for rushing yards.  Tashard Choice is the bright spot for the offense as he dominated the rest of the ACC in terms of rushing yardage, even though the opposition keyed in on his every move.  Taylor Bennett couldn't provide enough balance though as he threw for only two touchdowns in the first nine games.

Fresno State had a lot of things go right for them this season, and that's why they were more successful than in recent past.  The Bulldogs regularly have beat top teams but have failed to take down the easy ones, as evidenced by last year's 4-8 performance.  This year things were different as early in the year Fresno State lost a close one to A&M in overtime and beat up Kansas State later in the year.  This team likes to run the ball to control the clock with a balanced rushing attack.  Several players contributed, and the fact that there is a decent receiving target in Bear Pascoe at tight end gives them a decent chance at moving the ball in this game.  The secondary is susceptible, but the question is whether Bennett can do anything about it.  If Tech goes with Choice most of the game, they would be playing right into the strength of the Fresno defense.
