Will it be déjà vu for Iowa? The
hiring of Lickliter marks the second
time in less than a decade that Iowa
has hired an Indiana native who’s
the son of his high school
basketball coach who recently led
their mid-major team to the Sweet
16. Alford was a star guard at
Indiana and even played in the NBA
while Lickliter never starred at the
college level as a player. His
success has come as a coach. I think
this makes Lickliter a good fit
right off the bat. He’s a coach
first and foremost.
Lickliter took a Butler team, who no
one expected much from, to the Sweet
16 a season ago, Iowa fans are
hoping that he can work some more
magic for them. He’ll have his work
cut out for himself as Iowa lost
Adam Huluska and his 20+ points per
game and Tyler Smith and his 15
points per game.
Iowa has size, depth, and experience
in the front court, the problem is
that these guys are just not that
good. We really can’t expect big
numbers from Seth Gorney or Kurt
Looby. Gorney will make one good
play and then five bad ones. He is a
better shooter than he is a post up
player and rebounder. What a waste
of a 7’0’’ frame. Looby is a good
shot blocker but that’s about it.
His length does not make up for his
slender frame in the post.
The backcourt will have to do most
of the damage for the Hawks this
season. Tony Freeman is the top
returning scorer on the team. His
scoring and field goal attempts will
both increase with Haluska a Smith
gone. Iowa will go as he goes most
nights. Justin Johnson gives Iowa a
solid three point threat. He nailed
45 threes in limited time off the
bench last season.
Little is expected from Iowa this
season. This just might make them a
good underdog for your college
basketball betting as the oddsmakers
will likely undervalue the Hawks
plenty as they do most teams not
expected to be good. If Lickliter
can get Iowa to .500, he deserves
coach of the year honors again in my
opinion.
Jimmy Boyd will make beating the
college basketball odds easy
this season with his winning
college basketball picks. No
other handicapper on the planet has
picked the college ranks more
consistently the past five years.
