Hopes are high for the Kansas State Wildcats this season and the college basketball odds put out by the sportsbooks agree that they should be, picking K-State to finish second in the Big 12 behind their in-state rivals. The fact that Bob Huggins is off to coach his alma mater, West Virginia, does not have oddsmakers worried because the cats were still able to land prize recruit Michael Beasley. The 6’10’’ southpaw is only the third McDonald’s All-American to ever sign with K-State and he is believed to be the best recruit ever landed in school history.

After finishing 23-12 last season and advancing to the NIT, which was the school’s first postseason appearance since 1998-99, the cats feel they are ready to get to the Big Dance and to do some damage. It all starts in the frontcourt with Beasley. If you liked what you saw with Kevin Durant last season, you may have a feeling of déjà vu with this kid. Bill Walker will be another NBA talent to compliment the new comer. He was regarded as a lottery pick last year until he suffered a season ending knee injury as a freshman. At 6’6’’ and 240 pounds, this guy is a load. He averaged 11.3 points per game last season and will easily better than that in season two. Another bull the cats have is 6’5’’ senior David Hoskins, who is the top returning scorer averaging 14.5 points per game last season.

The backcourt does not have quite as much experience, but don’t be surprised if freshman Dominique Sutton is a hit right out of the gate. Jacob Pullen is the point guard of the future and senior Clent Stewart will mentor him this season.

The time is now for Kansas State to take advantage of their talent pool if they hope to make their first NCAA Tournament in over 10 seasons. Beasley and Walker will no doubt be heading off to the NBA after this season so K-State can’t wait. The Wildcats finished fourth in the conference a year ago. If the cats finish there or higher again, it will be the first time since 1989-90 that they have strung together back-to-back upper division finishes.

New head coach Frank Martin says that if the cats don’t win it all, they haven’t accomplished anything. Those are big words from a coach whose team hasn’t been dancing for a while. A Sweet 16 is in the equation, but I don’t think the cats have enough experience to go further.
