2007 Kansas State Wildcats Football Preview & Predictions

Now take a look at our 2008 Kansas State Football Predictions!

Jimmy Boyd's 2007 Kansas State Wildcats football preview and predictions show a team that is destined for a third place finish in the Big 12 North and a 7-5 record.  This should be good enough for another bowl appearance, even though the team is hoping for more than the same as last season.  It'll be tough to beat 4-4 in the Big 12 though with games at Texas, Oklahoma State, and Nebraska.  The home schedule has Missouri, which is kind of a swing game for the team, win that and the year is going to look that much better.  The rest of the schedule is pretty manageable, and Ron Prince should be able to make some strides starting this year and leading into the future.

Josh Freeman is going to be the man who runs this offense for years to come, at least that is what the coaching staff is hoping for out of him.  This guy is big, and Prince thinks he resembles last year's no. 1 NFL draft pick JaMarcus Russell.  The problem last year was he was inconsistent, yet he was a true freshman.  If he keeps learning like he should expect more touchdowns than interceptions this year.  James Johnson will be the primary running back, but when the team needs a playmaker then the speedy Leon Patton will be in the backfield.  Jordy Nelson is the main threat as a pass catcher as the senior had 39 catches for 547 yards, but only a single score as a junior.  If Freeman improves those numbers will go up as well.  He had great numbers as a sophomore, and if he can stay healthy this should be a breakout year.  There is only one returning lineman, so Freeman better be ready to throw on the run.  If this unit improves, so will the numbers of the whole team.

The defense is going to have to deal with the change to a 3-4 from the old 4-3.  The staff feels this will leave the Wildcats better prepared for the high flying offenses now seen in Big 12 play.  Now at linebacker you'll see former end, and former All-Big 12 tandout Ian Campell, who will be joined by a top 25 juco recruit Chris Patterson.  In the secondary the team is led by the safeties, one being Gary Chandler who comes in as a top 10 juco recruit and the other is Marcus Watts, known as the heart and soul on this side of the ball.  He missed the last four games of last season with an injury, and coaches say he's even hungrier now.  The defense seems to be stockpiled with junior college transfers, and highly touted one at that.  This is the quickest way to turn a team around that gave up 24 ppg a year ago.  Expect slight improvement, but not great jumps this season.
