2007 Las Vegas Bowl Odds & Predictions

When the 2007 Las Vegas Bowl odds were posted many were surprised to see BYU at nearly a touchdown favorite over UCLA.  You see, all the way back in week 2 the Bruins beat the Cougars 27-17, but how things have changed since then.  First off, that game was played at the Rose Bowl and this game will be taking place on a neutral field.  Second of all, these two teams took drastically different paths over the course of the season since that point to end up where we are now.  Take a look at this preview for a deeper look, but if you want our take on who is going to cover the spread then get signed up for our college bowl picks today.

BYU was supposed to have a down season, especially on offense after losing last year's starting quarterback, John Beck, to the NFL and the Miami Dolphins.  However the offense has kept pace with last year's number thanks in large part to the effectiveness of Beck's replacement, Max Hall.  While Hall is taking care of the passing game the Cougars have gotten a real boost in the backfield from a redshirt freshman Harvey Unga.  Unga put up more than 1840 yards from scrimmage on his way to scoring 17 touchdowns for BYU.  Defensively the team is lead by Jan Jorgenson.  This defensive end led the Mountain West in both sacks and tackles for losses despite being only a sophomore.  It definitely looks like there is a bright future for BYU, but the team has to be slightly disappointed to get a 6-6 UCLA team in a December 22nd bowl game after rattling off nine straight wins to end the year and finish at 10-2.  For the motivation factor we have to lean against the Cougars.

UCLA has had to deal with their fair share of injuries this season, but none of them cost the team as dearly as when running back Kahlil Bell was lost at the end of October.  Since then, the Bruins have scored only five offensive touchdowns in four games, costing the job of head coach Karl Dorrell.  Dorrell won't be on the sidelines for this one either, and the head coaching duties will belong to defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker.  Walker's side of the ball has been impressive all season long and they are going to have to be stifling once again if the Bruins are going to have any chance at winning this game.  It was supposed to be a breakthrough season for UCLA, but after losing five of their last seven this team was lucky to even make the post-season.  It will be interesting to see how much fire they come out with for their interim head man.
