Rick Pitino feels that this season’s team is the most talented he has had at Louisville. The Cards lose guard Brandon Jenkins from their second place Big East team a season ago, but his 5.2 points per game will easily be replaced.

Last season, the Cards totaled 24 wins thanks to winning eight of their last 10. They were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tourney by a very good Texas A&M team in a barn burner. We feel this year’s Cards will push the 30-win mark and will have a great shot at getting to the Elite Eight.

6’11’’ versatile center, David Padgett, is the team’s captain and go-to guy in the front court. He averaged just under 10 points and 6 boards per game last season. Because of his high free throw shooting percentage (82.3), he will be a great asset down the stretch of games.

Earl Clark and Derrick Caracter are both talented frontcourt presences. Clark was dominant in offseason workouts and Caracter showed flashes of stardom as a frosh last season. Juan Palacios gives the Cards veteran experience and leadership that has come with the 85 games he has started through three seasons. Terrence Williams will be a frontcourt starter without question. Williams is one of the rare triple double threats in college hoops. He averaged 12.4 points, 7.0 boards, and 3.8 assists per game last season and we anticipate all of these numbers increasing.

Williams will help out in the frontcourt as well to give the Cards a little more depth on the perimeter and to take advantage of his ability to step out and shoot the three. Edgar Sosa will be one of the nation’s premier points. This kid can flat out light it up as we saw against Texas A&M in the tourney, but he needs to become a better playmaker for this team to reach its full potential. His 2.6 assists per game are not going to cut it this season.

Pitino feels this team is even better than his previous Final Four team he had at Louisville. There’s no doubt that the Cards will challenge for a Big East title again and that they will go deep in the tourney.
