2007 Memorial Predictions

2007 Memorial Odds are now posted so it’s time for Jimmy Boyd to deliver his 2007 Memorial predictions. If we look to the last couple years at Muirfield Village Golf Club as any indicator, we might be taking a closer look at making our wagers on the field which is listed at 3/1 odds. Last year’s Memorial Tournament champ, Carl Pettersson is showing phenomenal value at 100/1 odds. In 2005, little known Bart Bryant held off Jeff Sluman, Fred Couples, and Davis Toms to win this event which even featured Tiger Woods near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday. Woods sat out last year’s Memorial mourning the loss of his father and should be a top competitor in this year’s tournament as he gears up for the U.S. Open which is just two weeks away.

Zach Johnson tied for second in last year’s Memorial Tournament and since then has gone on to achieve Master’s glory. Perhaps, he can make it a clean sweep by winning the “Masters of the Midwest” this weekend. Phil Mickelson is also a notable challenger as his recent strong play and solid showing here last year elevates his status even more.

I’m going to go ahead and rule out a repeat for Pettersson. He has only one top 10 finish in 2007 and doesn’t rank in the top 50 in any of the PGA Tour statistical categories. Woods is a strong candidate but isn’t showing quite the value I’m looking for. The field won’t give us the kind of strong return we are going after either. In my mind that leaves Phil Mickelson. We pounded Phil two weeks ago and he brought home The Player’s Championship for us. He will be well rested not playing in last week’s Crowne Plaza Invitational. He has led up to this event with two third place finishes at the Byron Nelson and Wachovia Championships and, of course, a first place finish at The Players. Muirfield Village is a shot maker’s course and no one has been dropping shots better than Lefty in 2007. He ranks first in putting and birdies on the tour and third in eagles. Phil is showing slightly better value than Woods or the field at 7/1 odds. We’ll make him our man again this week.
