The major pieces are still in place for the offense.
Chad Henne had his worst statistical year last season with 22 touchdowns
and 2,508 yards, but he only threw 8 picks and completed 62% of his
passes. That is the kind of game management that helped Michigan
start out 11-0. He will also have one of the best wide receiver's
in the college ranks with Mario Manningham to go with Greg Matthews and
Adrian Arrington. Of course the running game will once again be in
Mike Hart's hands. Last season he gained 1,562 yards on only 318
carries and 14 touchdowns. Jake Long is an All-American and should
make Henne comfortable that his blind side is protected.
The defense only has four returning starters, but Ron English is
known as a great teacher and players will step up to fill the holes. At
tackle it most likely will be Terrance Taylor, who is the only returning starter
on the line. Shawn Cable was stellar last year on the outside, but as the
only returning linebacker from a year ago it will be interesting to see how he
takes on a starring role. The same story on the secondary as Morgan Trent
is ready to step up along with sophomores Johnny Sears and Stevie Brown.
Michigan is in the same situation as the
Wisconsin Badgers. The
schedule is favorable with eight home games before they head to
Michigan State for a rivalry
game and Wisconsin. The season ends against
Ohio State, but this game is on the
Wolverines home turf this year. Every big game except Wisconsin is home,
so the winner of that game will most likely be hoisting the Big Ten trophy at
season's end.
